A Winter Honeymoon in Uttarakhand: Where to Go for Snow, Views or Quiet

Nainital, Mukteshwar and Ramgarh, Auli, Binsar and Kausani compared for a couple in December to February: how likely snow is, how far each is from Haldwani, what you need at check-in, and room rates we read on the hotels’ own sites.

The short answer: For a winter honeymoon in Uttarakhand, choose by what you want most. For the surest snow go to Auli, the state’s ski slope, or Munsiyari in far Kumaon, both a long day or two from the plains. For snow within a morning’s drive of Haldwani, Mukteshwar and the peaks above Nainital had some in each of the last three winters, mostly in January and February. For wide Himalayan views and quiet, Binsar and Kausani, though snow there is rare. And for a lake, cafes and a Mall Road walk, Nainital itself. No law stops a couple, married or not, from sharing a hotel room; what every hotel needs is a government photo ID for each of you. A double room we could book on the hotels’ own sites for mid-December ran from Rs 1,875 at the state tourism lodge in Kausani to Rs 11,000 plus tax at a resort near Mukteshwar, and rates rise sharply over Christmas and New Year.

Rates and rules this winter, checked 29 October 2026.

Most of this page holds good every winter. The things below change, so they sit here with the day we checked them.

Winter 2026-27 for couples

  • Room rates: the rates on this page were read on the hotels’ own sites and on the booking pages of the state tourism corporations, KMVN in Kumaon and GMVN in Garhwal, on 29 October 2026, for a double room on Wednesday 16 and Saturday 19 December 2026. Most were the same on both nights. The week from Christmas to New Year costs more everywhere, and some hotels add a New Year supplement on top.
  • Couple rules: we found no order under Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code, and no police order, that asks a couple for anything more than a photo ID each at a hotel. Hotels are expected to check that ID: in July 2025 Haldwani police fined a hotel Rs 10,000 for giving a couple a room without it.
  • Auli: the ropeway from Jyotirmath is still shut, as it has been since January 2023, so the last stretch is by road.
  • Snow so far: the high peaks above Auli had snow on 9 October 2026; nothing had settled in Kumaon when we checked.

Sources: the KMVN and GMVN booking pages and the hotels’ own sites named in the rates table (29 October 2026), Amar Ujala (Haldwani, 17 July 2025; Chamoli, 21 June 2026) and ETV Bharat (9 October 2026).

Pick by what you want: snow, views, quiet or a lake.

Most couples have room for four or five nights and one long drive, so it helps to decide first what the trip is for. Snow in Uttarakhand is never certain, and it falls mostly between late December and February on ground above about 2,000 m; our guide to where to see snow in Uttarakhand has three winters of dates for every place below. The distances are by Google Maps from the Haldwani bus stand, measured on 27 and 29 October 2026.

Kausani1,890 mOne of three, the first since 2019140 km, 4 h 40 minSunrise on the snow peaks, a small town

Munsiyari, in the far north of Kumaon, is the other sure place for snow, especially on the ridge above it, but it is about 280 km and ten to eleven hours from Haldwani, so it suits a longer trip. For a first winter trip together, Nainital with two nights in Mukteshwar is the easiest pairing, and Auli is the one to choose if snow matters more than anything else.

Nainital in winter for couples.

Nainital is the easiest of these to reach and the busiest. The lake, the boats, the Mall Road at dusk and the cafes stay open all winter, and the town has far more rooms in every price band than anywhere else on this page. December days are cool and clear and the nights cold; our Nainital in December guide has the temperatures. Snow is another matter. The peaks above town, Naina Peak, Snow View and Kilbury, had snow in each of the last three winters, but in town it usually comes as flakes that melt within hours, so do not plan a honeymoon around snow on the Mall; our Nainital snowfall guide has the odds month by month.

Christmas to New Year is the peak. Last winter police held outside vehicles, ran shuttles from parking lots below the town on 24 and 25 December and 31 December and 1 January, and the hotel association reported 70 per cent of rooms booked for New Year’s Eve. Since 16 July 2026 outside four-wheelers also pay a Rs 300 entry fee. If you want Nainital quieter, go in the first half of December or after the first week of January. For couple-friendly rooms in town, see our guide to couple-friendly hotels in Nainital and the Nainital couple hotel price list.

Mukteshwar and Ramgarh: cottages and Himalayan views.

Mukteshwar, at 2,286 m on a ridge beyond Bhowali, is where we would send a couple who want snow without a ten-hour drive. It had snow in each of the last three winters, heavy on 12 January 2025 and again on 23 January 2026, when the season’s first fall covered Mukteshwar, Ramgarh and Dhanachuli together. On a clear morning the long line of the Himalaya stands across the valley, and the stays here are mostly cottages and small resorts rather than town hotels. From the Haldwani bus stand it is 72.7 km and about two and a half hours on Google Maps by Bhowali and Ramgarh; our Haldwani to Mukteshwar guide has both roads.

Ramgarh, 58.8 km from Haldwani on the same road, is smaller and slower, with a few old bungalows among its stays, and it had snow on the same two days as Mukteshwar. It works well as a first night before Mukteshwar, or as the quieter base if you would rather drive up for the snow views.

Auli: snow and slopes.

If snow is the point, Auli is the answer. The slopes above Jyotirmath, the town most people still call Joshimath, run from 2,500 m to 3,050 m and had snow in each of the last three winters, with the best cover from late January into February. There is a chairlift on the slopes, ski courses run by GMVN, and rooms at GMVN’s resort on the slopes or, with more choice, in Jyotirmath below. It is properly cold, with January nights around minus 8°C on the slopes, and it is far: 308 km from Haldwani or 491 km from Delhi, two days each way in winter. Our Auli in winter guide has the snow dates, temperatures and what is running this season, and our guide to getting to Auli has the trains, buses and roads.

Binsar and Kausani: sunrise and silence.

Binsar is a wildlife sanctuary on a forested ridge beyond Almora, about 2,400 m up, and the quietest of these places. The state’s tourist lodge sits inside the sanctuary, about 10 km past the forest gate, which keeps fixed hours, so plan to arrive in daylight. From the Haldwani bus stand it is 137 km and about five hours. The view on a clear day takes in a long stretch of the snow range. Snow is less likely than at Mukteshwar: in the last three winters it settled only once, on 23 January 2026.

Kausani, at 1,890 m, is a small hill town known for sunrise on Trishul and the Panchachuli peaks. It is easier than Binsar, with more rooms, 140 km and about four and three quarter hours from Haldwani. Snow is rare here: the fall of January 2026 was its first since 2019. Our Haldwani to Almora guide covers the road that both places start from.

What you need at check-in.

No law in India stops two adults, married or not, from sharing a hotel room, and no law requires a marriage certificate. What hotels must do is check a government photo ID for every guest and keep a register, and police do check: in July 2025 a Haldwani hotel was fined Rs 10,000 for giving a couple a room without ID, and in September 2026 a police drive in Haldwani reminded hotels and guest houses to verify every guest’s ID. So carry an original photo ID for each of you, an Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence. We found no rule under Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code that changes this for a hotel stay; its live-in registration is about couples who share a household, not guests on holiday.

Individual hotels still set their own house rules, and a few turn away unmarried couples or local IDs. A phone call the day before, asking whether they accept two IDs with different surnames and an address in the same district, settles it. Our check-in guide for couples in Nainital walks through the desk step by step, and the couple-friendly hotels directory lists stays that say they welcome couples.

What a night costs: rates we read on 29 October.

These are rates for a double room for two, read on 29 October 2026 on the property’s own site or booking page, for the nights of 16 and 19 December 2026 unless a tariff season is given. They are examples to show the range, not a ranking, and no property paid to be here. The meal plan matters: CP means breakfast is included, MAP breakfast and dinner, and EP the room alone.

Three things stand out. The state tourism lodges, KMVN in Kumaon and GMVN at Auli, are the cheapest way to stay in the best spots, at Rs 1,875 to Rs 5,000 for a double, though their pages often do not say what is included; ring and ask. Private hotels and resorts with breakfast run from about Rs 5,500 to Rs 7,600 a night all in, and the upmarket ones Rs 9,000 to Rs 18,000 plus tax. And over Christmas and New Year expect more: Chevron Fairhavens’ 2026-27 tariff runs from Rs 6,500 to Rs 10,000 plus GST by season, with a New Year supplement on top. Several private rates were shown as discounts on a higher price and can change before December, so book early and screenshot what you are quoted.

A package or booking it yourself.

Honeymoon packages bundle the car, the hotels and some meals into one price, which is easier but hides what you are paying for each part. We could not compare package prices fairly, so before you buy one, check four things against this page: the name of each hotel and its room type, so you can look up its own rate; the meal plan, CP or MAP; whether the car and driver are included for the whole trip, and, for Auli, whether the car can manage the snow beyond the TV Tower bend, where only four-wheel drives are let through after heavy snow; and whether the hotels have confirmed in writing that they accept a couple with two IDs. Booking it yourself is not hard for Kumaon: book the rooms on the hotels’ own sites or KMVN’s, and hire a taxi from Haldwani or Kathgodam for the whole trip, for which our Haldwani cab guide lists operators. If you are coming from Delhi, our Delhi to Nainital guide compares the train, bus, car and flight. For everything else about the season, from festivals to closures, start with our Uttarakhand in winter guide.

Quick answers

Questions about a winter honeymoon in Uttarakhand.

Is Uttarakhand good for a honeymoon in December?

Yes, if you want clear mountain views, quiet hill stations and cold nights, but do not count on snow. In the last three Decembers the hill stations near Haldwani, such as Nainital and Mukteshwar, had snow only in 2024; most snow comes in January and February. Christmas to New Year is the busiest and dearest week, so the first half of December is the quieter time to go.

Which place in Uttarakhand has snow for a honeymoon?

Auli is the surest, with snow on its slopes in each of the last three winters, and Munsiyari in far Kumaon is the other. Closer to Haldwani, Mukteshwar and the peaks above Nainital also had snow in each of those winters, mostly in January and February, though less of it.

How much does a winter honeymoon in Nainital cost?

Rooms are the biggest part. For mid-December 2026 a double at the state tourism lodge in Tallital was Rs 3,500 with breakfast, a mid-range hotel Rs 6,500 to Rs 10,000 plus GST by season with breakfast and dinner, and an upmarket one Rs 9,374 plus Rs 1,898 tax with breakfast, read on 29 October 2026. Christmas to New Year costs more, and some hotels add a New Year supplement.

Is a honeymoon package cheaper than booking it yourself?

It depends on what the package includes. Ask for the name of each hotel, the room type and the meal plan, and compare them with the hotels’ own rates, then add the cost of a taxi for the whole trip. For Kumaon, booking rooms directly and hiring a taxi from Haldwani or Kathgodam is straightforward.

Which is quieter in winter, Binsar or Kausani?

Binsar. Its state tourist lodge sits inside a wildlife sanctuary about 10 km past a forest gate that keeps fixed hours, with forest all round. Kausani is a small town with more rooms and easier access, known for sunrise on the snow peaks. Snow is uncommon at both: each had it once in the last three winters.
