Mukteshwar is 68 km and about 2 hr 30 min from Haldwani via Bhowali on NH109. Here is the route, what cabs cost in 2026, whether to go for the day or stay over, and where to sleep if you sensibly book the night.
The short answer: Mukteshwar is 68 km from Haldwani via Bhowali on NH109, and the drive takes 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr, depending on traffic in Bhowali bazaar. A sedan cab costs Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500 one-way, or Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,800 for a same-day round trip with a 4-hour wait. Our honest advice is to stay the night rather than go for the day. The bazaar at Bhowali is the biggest unknown on the route, and it is easiest to get through before 9 AM and after 7 PM. For a bed, the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam guest house at Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,500 a night is the budget choice, mid-range resorts such as The Birdcage and Sun and Mist charge Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,500, and the premium boutique hotels, Te Aroha and Stillwoods, Rs 7,500 to Rs 14,000.

The one sensible way to drive from Haldwani to Mukteshwar is north on NH109 through Kathgodam, past the Bhimtal turn-off and into Bhowali, then on the road towards Almora, which climbs through Ramgarh and Dhanachuli to Mukteshwar. It is 68 km in all and takes 2 hr 30 min on a quiet weekday morning. Kilometre 0 to 5: Haldwani to Kathgodam. This is an ordinary city road with traffic and signals. Allow 15 minutes if you leave between 7 and 8 AM, or 25 minutes after 9 AM. The railway crossing at Kathgodam can hold traffic up for 5 to 8 minutes when a Shatabdi comes in.
Kilometre 5 to 22: Kathgodam to the Bhimtal turn-off. NH109 climbs gently through Ranibagh and Choti Mukhani on a well-surfaced two-lane road, and this stretch takes 25 minutes. At the Bhimtal junction you have to choose: the right fork carries on to Bhowali on NH109, and the left fork goes 9 km to Bhimtal lake.
Kilometre 22 to 33: the Bhimtal turn-off to Bhowali. The road narrows as it climbs into the foothills, and this part takes 20 to 25 minutes. At the 28 km mark two roadside dhabas, the Garhwal Mess and the Bhowali Highway Cafe, are good for chai and aloo paratha.
Kilometre 33 to 35: Bhowali bazaar. This is where you lose the most time. The bazaar is a 2 km strip of fruit stalls and shops where the road shrinks to a single lane and parked trucks slow everything down. Before 9 AM you can get through Bhowali in 6 minutes, but between 10 AM and 6 PM the same stretch can take 18 to 25 minutes. A bypass for Bhowali was announced in 2024 but had not opened by mid-2026, so the bottleneck is still there.
Kilometre 35 to 68: Bhowali to Mukteshwar via Ramgarh. After Bhowali, take the right fork towards Almora. The road climbs through Ramgarh, an orchard belt where peaches and apples are in season from May to July, then Dhanachuli and Satoli into Mukteshwar Block. It is a mountain road of hairpin bends all the way, with an average speed of 28 km per hour, and this part takes 1 hr 15 min. On a clear day the last 8 km from Satoli have the best views of Trishul, so ask the driver to stop for a few minutes at the Sitla viewpoint.
You can also take the left fork at the Bhimtal turn-off at the 22 km mark, drive through Bhimtal and round the eastern Sattal lakes, and rejoin the Almora road near Kainchi Dham. This adds 12 km, making 80 km in all, and 35 minutes, for a total of 3 hr 5 min, but it avoids Bhowali bazaar altogether.
When to take it. On Saturdays and Sundays between 11 AM and 5 PM, Bhowali bazaar adds 20 minutes to the usual route, and going round saves you 5 minutes overall and gives you a much calmer drive. It also makes sense if you want to stop at Bhimtal and Sattal on the way.
When to stay on NH109. On any weekday morning before 9 AM, when you can get through Bhowali in 6 minutes and the usual route really is quicker. Stay on it too if you are going by Roadways bus, since the bus only runs on the main route.

On this route the fare depends on where you book, and each of the three main ways of booking gives a different price for the same trip.
The local taxi-union rate at the Haldwani city stands is Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,200 one-way in a sedan and Rs 3,800 to Rs 4,200 in an Innova. This is what you pay at the cab desk at the Roadways bus stand or at the Mangal Padav stand. The driver may add Rs 300 to Rs 500 for driving at night, if you come back after 7 PM, or for parking in Bhowali.
The prepaid counter at Kathgodam Junction charges Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,500 one-way for a sedan and Rs 4,200 to Rs 4,500 for an Innova. The extra Rs 300 to Rs 500 over the city rate pays for convenience: you pay before you leave the station, and a driver is sent to your platform within 15 minutes. It is worth it if you are tired after a long train journey.
Online cab booking sites charge Rs 3,400 to Rs 4,200 one-way for a sedan and Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,500 for an Innova. Because the sites take a commission, their prices are always 15 to 25 percent above the local rate. Use them only if you need a digital invoice to claim the cost back from your company.
A same-day round trip with a 4-hour wait at Mukteshwar costs Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,800 in a sedan and Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,500 in an Innova. A fair price for this is roughly 1.6x the one-way fare, not 2x, because drivers count the waiting time at half fare. If a driver quotes 2x, bargain.

A same-day trip looks poor value once you list what you would actually see.
On a same-day trip you leave Haldwani by 8 AM, reach Mukteshwar by 10:45 AM, have four hours there including lunch, and set off by 3 PM to be back in Haldwani by 6 PM. Four hours is enough for the Mukteshwar Dham temple (40 min including darshan), the Chauli ki Jali cliffs and the viewpoint beside them (90 min, with a 15-min stop for photographs) and a quick lunch at the PWD canteen (45 min). It is not enough for the PWD apple orchard, a walk round the IVRI campus, the Bhalu Gaon ridge, sunset at the Sitla viewpoint or the next morning's sunrise over Trishul and Nanda Devi, which is the best thing Mukteshwar has to offer.
Staying overnight gets you that sunrise. Leave Haldwani at 10 AM the day before, reach Mukteshwar at 12:45 PM and settle in by 2 PM. Spend the afternoon on the temple and one ridge walk, keep the evening for sunset at Sitla, sleep through a cool summer night of 14 degrees C, and get up at 5:30 AM for the sunrise. Drive back after a 9 AM breakfast and you will be in Haldwani by noon.
If you only have a single day out of Haldwani and Mukteshwar is on your list, go to Bhimtal instead. There the sums work: 31 km and 55 min each way, which leaves four proper hours on the lake and around the bazaar.
Mukteshwar has only roughly 25 places to stay, and they fall into three price bands.
Budget (Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,800). The best choice is the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) guest house near the temple, which is state-run, basic and clean, with a small canteen. Book through the KMVN website or at the counter, because turning up on the day is a gamble at weekends. The other cheap option is the PWD inspection bungalow at Mukteshwar, which takes ordinary guests if you send a written request to the PWD office.
Mid-range (Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,500). The Birdcage, Sun and Mist, Forest Bungalow Mukteshwar and the Chevron Mountain Villas are in this band. All four are small resorts with 8 to 18 rooms, a little restaurant, mountain views and quiet evenings. The Birdcage and Sun and Mist are the most dependable; book through a booking site or with the hotel directly.
Premium boutique (Rs 7,500 to Rs 14,000). This band has Te Aroha Hotel, Stillwoods and the Mountain Trail Resort. Te Aroha and Stillwoods are the ones to choose for a honeymoon or a longer stay, and both sell out 3 to 4 weeks ahead in the peak weeks of April-June and October.
If your trip takes in both Haldwani and Mukteshwar, spend the night in Mukteshwar and use a Haldwani hotel at the start and end of the trip. In Haldwani, the Hotel Blue Saphire Countryside on Rampur Road is our choice: it has a rooftop pool and its rates suit a single night at either end.
April to June is the main season. Days are 18 to 25 degrees C and nights 12 to 16 degrees C. Mornings are clear, with some cloud in the afternoon now and then, and this is the best weather for seeing Trishul and Nanda Devi. The apple orchards blossom in early May. Hotels charge 25 percent more at this peak.
July to mid-September is the monsoon. It rains every day, the hairpin road turns wet and slippery, and mist rolls in by 3 PM and hides the peaks. The drive stretches to 3 hr 30 min. Skip these months unless you want green, misty mountains and do not mind missing the views.
Mid-September to early November comes after the monsoon. The air is the cleanest of the year, the mountains are at their clearest, and days are 15 to 22 degrees C. It is the second-best season, and hotels charge 15 percent above their base rates.
December to February is winter, with days of 8 to 14 degrees C and nights of 0 to 4 degrees C. The road stays open, though when snow falls on the upper bends in late December and January it can close the route for 1 to 2 days each time. Hotels charge their base rates with nothing extra. Come now if you want a cold mountain trip and have the warm clothes for it.

Mukteshwar is one of the two places closest to Haldwani that get snow in most winters. Motion sickness. The stretch from Bhowali to Mukteshwar has 80 to 100 hairpin bends. If you get carsick, take a tablet 45 minutes before you leave Bhowali, sit in the front passenger seat and keep breakfast light.
Fuel. Fill up in Haldwani. The next petrol pump is at Bhowali, at the 40 km mark, and after that there is none until Almora. On this climb a sedan does 9 to 11 km to the litre.
Phone signal. Jio and Airtel work for most of the route, but both are weak for 8 km between Ramgarh and Dhanachuli, so save offline maps before you leave Haldwani.
Where the driver sleeps. If you are staying the night at Mukteshwar and coming back the next morning, agree where the driver will sleep before you leave Haldwani. Some drivers expect the hotel to give them a basic room, which some boutique hotels do not, and others stay in the KMVN dormitory for Rs 250. Add Rs 400 to Rs 600 to the round-trip fare for the driver's night.

2 hr 30 min on a quiet weekday morning and 3 hr on weekend afternoons, when Bhowali bazaar is busy. The quickest part is Haldwani to Bhowali, 33 km in 50 min on NH109. The slowest is Bhowali to Mukteshwar, 35 km in 1 hr 15 min on a mountain road of hairpin bends where the average speed is 28 km per hour.
Stay overnight. A same-day trip gives you four hours there after a 2 hr 30 min drive each way, which is enough only for the temple and Chauli ki Jali. The 350-year-old Mukteshwar Dham temple, the Chauli ki Jali cliffs, the PWD apple orchard and the views of Trishul and Nanda Devi need a full afternoon and the next morning, and the sunrise over those peaks needs a night. If you only have a single day out of Haldwani, go to Bhimtal instead, which is 31 km away.

Yes. Uttarakhand Roadways runs three buses a day from the Haldwani Roadways bus stand at Tikonia, at 06:30 AM, 09:45 AM and 02:30 PM. The fare is Rs 180 to Rs 220 one-way and the journey takes 3 hr 30 min to 4 hr 30 min, including a halt at Bhowali. In peak season the two morning buses fill up on Fridays and Saturdays, so book at the counter the evening before. The afternoon bus is the least crowded, but it reaches Mukteshwar after sunset, which is risky on a road full of hairpin bends.
