68 km, 2 hr 30 min via Bhowali on NH109. The route, the 2026 cab fares, the day-trip versus overnight call, and where to stay if you do the right thing and book the night.
The short answer: Haldwani to Mukteshwar is 68 km via Bhowali on NH109, drive time 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr depending on Bhowali bazaar traffic. Sedan cab Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500 one-way, Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,800 same-day round trip with a 4-hour wait. The honest call: Mukteshwar rewards an overnight stay, not a day trip. The Bhowali bazaar choke is the single biggest variable on the route, easing before 9 AM and after 7 PM. The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam guest house at Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,500 a night is the budget pick; mid-range resorts (The Birdcage, Sun and Mist) sit at Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,500; boutique premium (Te Aroha, Stillwoods) runs Rs 7,500 to Rs 14,000.
The single sensible drive from Haldwani to Mukteshwar runs north on NH109 through Kathgodam, past the Bhimtal turn-off, into Bhowali, and then on the Almora-direction road that climbs through Ramgarh and Dhanachuli to Mukteshwar. Total 68 km, total drive time 2 hr 30 min on a quiet weekday morning.
Kilometre 0 to 5: Haldwani to Kathgodam. Standard city road, traffic and signal stops. Allow 15 minutes if you leave between 7 and 8 AM, or 25 minutes after 9 AM. The Kathgodam railway crossing can stall traffic by 5 to 8 minutes when a Shatabdi pulls in.
Kilometre 5 to 22: Kathgodam to Bhimtal turn-off. NH109 climbs gently through Ranibagh and Choti Mukhani. The road is two-lane and well-surfaced. Drive time 25 minutes. The Bhimtal junction is the decision point: right fork continues to Bhowali (NH109), left fork goes 9 km to Bhimtal lake.
Kilometre 22 to 33: Bhimtal turn-off to Bhowali. The road tightens into the foothills. Drive time 20 to 25 minutes. Two roadside dhabas (the Garhwal Mess and the Bhowali Highway Cafe) sit at the 28 km mark for chai and aloo paratha.
Kilometre 33 to 35: Bhowali bazaar. The single largest delay on the route. Bhowali bazaar is a 2 km strip of fruit market and shops where the road narrows to single lane and parked trucks slow the flow. Pre-9 AM, you clear Bhowali in 6 minutes. Between 10 AM and 6 PM, the same stretch can take 18 to 25 minutes. The Bhowali road bypass plan announced in 2024 has not opened as of mid-2026, so the choke remains.
Kilometre 35 to 68: Bhowali to Mukteshwar via Ramgarh. Right fork after Bhowali for the Almora direction. The road climbs through Ramgarh (a fruit-orchard belt with peach and apple seasons in May to July), Dhanachuli, Satoli and into Mukteshwar Block. Switchback mountain road throughout, average speed 28 km per hour. Drive time 1 hr 15 min. The last 8 km from Satoli onwards have the best views of the Trishul peak in clear weather; ask the driver to pull over briefly at the Sitla viewpoint.
The Bhimtal turn-off at the 22 km mark can be taken left, then through Bhimtal, around the eastern Sattal lakes, and rejoining the Almora road near Kainchi Dham. This alternate adds 12 km (total 80 km) and 35 minutes (total 3 hr 5 min), but skips the Bhowali bazaar choke entirely.
When to pick the alternate. Saturday and Sunday between 11 AM and 5 PM, when Bhowali bazaar adds 20 minutes to the standard route and the bypass saves 5 minutes net plus a much calmer drive. Also useful if you want to fit Bhimtal and Sattal stops into the same drive day.
When to stick to NH109. Any weekday morning before 9 AM, when Bhowali clears in 6 minutes and the standard route is genuinely faster. Also if you have a Roadways bus booking, since the bus runs only on the standard route.
For the Bhimtal and Sattal context, see the Haldwani to Bhimtal day-trip guide.
Cab pricing on this route runs on three pricing models. Each gives a different answer for the same trip.
Local taxi-union rate (Haldwani city stands). Sedan one-way Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,200; Innova one-way Rs 3,800 to Rs 4,200. This is what you pay at the Roadways bus stand cab desk or the Mangal Padav stand. The driver may add Rs 300 to Rs 500 for night-driving (after 7 PM return) or a Bhowali parking fee.
Kathgodam Junction pre-paid counter. Sedan one-way Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,500; Innova one-way Rs 4,200 to Rs 4,500. The Rs 300 to Rs 500 premium over the city rate is the convenience cost: you pay before you leave the station and the driver is assigned to your platform within 15 minutes. Worth it if you are tired off a long-distance train.
OTA cab platforms (MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Savaari). Sedan one-way Rs 3,400 to Rs 4,200; Innova one-way Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,500. OTA listings consistently price 15 to 25 percent above the local rate because of platform commission. Worth it if you want a digital invoice for company reimbursement, otherwise skip.
Round-trip rates (same day with 4-hour wait at Mukteshwar). Sedan Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,800; Innova Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,500. The right rate for a same-day trip is roughly 1.6x the one-way rate, not 2x; the driver counts the wait as half-fare time. If a driver quotes 2x, negotiate.

The math on a same-day trip looks bad once you list what you actually see.
A same-day trip leaves Haldwani by 8 AM, arrives Mukteshwar by 10:45 AM, gives you four hours on site (lunch included), and pulls out by 3 PM to reach Haldwani by 6 PM. Four hours is enough for the Mukteshwar Dham temple (40 min including darshan), the Chauli ki Jali cliffs and adjacent viewpoint (90 min including a 15-min photograph stop), and a quick lunch at the PWD canteen (45 min). It is not enough for the PWD apple orchard, the IVRI campus walk, the Bhalu Gaon ridge, the Sitla viewpoint at sunset, or the next-morning sunrise over Trishul and Nanda Devi, which is the single best thing Mukteshwar offers.
An overnight trip gets you the sunrise. Leave Haldwani at 10 AM the previous day, reach Mukteshwar at 12:45 PM, settle in by 2 PM, spend the afternoon on the temple and one ridge walk, hold the evening for sunset at Sitla, sleep through a cool 14 degrees C summer night, and wake at 5:30 AM for the sunrise. Drive back to Haldwani after a 9 AM breakfast, reach by noon.
If you are committed to a single day out of Haldwani and Mukteshwar is on the list, swap it for Bhimtal. The math on Bhimtal works: 31 km, 55 min each way, four real hours on the lake and around the bazaar.
Mukteshwar's hospitality market is small (roughly 25 properties) and clusters in three rate bands.
Budget (Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,800). The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) guest house near the temple is the pick. State-run, basic, clean, with a small canteen. Rooms book through the KMVN website or counter, and same-day walk-ins are unreliable on weekends. The other budget option is the Mukteshwar PWD inspection bungalow, available to civilian guests through a written request to the PWD office.
Mid-range (Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,500). The Birdcage, Sun and Mist, Forest Bungalow Mukteshwar, and the Chevron Mountain Villas sit in this band. All four are resort-style with 8 to 18 rooms, a small restaurant, mountain views and a quiet evening. The Birdcage and Sun and Mist are the most reliable; book on Booking.com or directly through the property.
Premium boutique (Rs 7,500 to Rs 14,000). Te Aroha Hotel, Stillwoods, and the Mountain Trail Resort. Te Aroha and Stillwoods are the headline picks for honeymoon travellers and longer stays. Both sell out 3 to 4 weeks in advance in April-June and October peak weeks.
For a Haldwani-Mukteshwar combination trip, the right move is to stay at Mukteshwar for the night and use a Haldwani hotel for the arrival and departure ends. The Hotel Blue Saphire Countryside on Rampur Road is the Haldwani pick with a rooftop pool and the right rate band for a one-night bookend stay.
April to June. The headline season. Daytime 18 to 25 degrees C, nights 12 to 16 degrees C. Clear mornings, occasional afternoon cloud cover, peak viewing weather for Trishul and Nanda Devi. The apple orchards bloom in early May. Hotels run 25 percent peak premium.
July to mid-September. Monsoon. Daily rain, the switchback road wets to a slippery sheen, mist rolls in by 3 PM and obscures the peaks. Drive time stretches to 3 hr 30 min. Skip unless you specifically want a green-and-misty mountain feel and are not optimising for views.
Mid-September to early November. Post-monsoon. Cleanest air of the year, mountain views at peak clarity, daytime 15 to 22 degrees C. The second-best season. Hotels run a 15 percent shoulder premium.
December to February. Winter. Daytime 8 to 14 degrees C, nights 0 to 4 degrees C. The road remains motorable; occasional snow on the upper switchbacks in late December and January closes the route for 1 to 2 days per snow event. Hotels run base rates with no premium. The pick for travellers who want a cold-weather mountain trip and have the warm clothing.
For a fuller seasonal comparison, see the best time to visit Haldwani guide.
Motion sickness. The Bhowali-to-Mukteshwar leg has 80 to 100 hairpin turns. Anyone prone to motion sickness should take a tablet 45 minutes before leaving Bhowali. Sit in the front passenger seat. Avoid heavy breakfast.
Fuel. Fill up in Haldwani. The next petrol pump is at Bhowali (40 km mark), then nothing until Almora. Sedan-fuel consumption on this climb runs 9 to 11 km per litre.
Cell signal. Jio and Airtel hold through most of the route. The 8 km stretch between Ramgarh and Dhanachuli has weak signal on both networks; this is the right time to save offline maps before leaving Haldwani.
Driver night-stay. If you plan an overnight at Mukteshwar with a return next morning, agree the driver's night-stay arrangement before leaving Haldwani. Some drivers expect the hotel to provide a basic room (some boutique hotels do not), others stay at the KMVN dorm at Rs 250. Add a Rs 400 to Rs 600 driver-night charge to the round-trip fare.
The Haldwani travel cluster covers Bhimtal, Nainital, Kainchi Dham and the cab market in detail.
68 km via Bhowali on NH109. Straight-line distance 49 km. Drive time 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr depending on Bhowali bazaar traffic. The Bhimtal turn-off route adds 12 km but skips Bhowali.
Sedan one-way Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500. Innova one-way Rs 3,800 to Rs 4,500. Same-day round trip with a 4-hour wait Rs 4,500 to Rs 7,500. Pre-paid Kathgodam cabs price Rs 300 to Rs 500 above the local rate.
2 hr 30 min on a quiet weekday morning, 3 hr on weekend afternoons. Haldwani to Bhowali is 33 km in 50 min. Bhowali to Mukteshwar is 35 km in 1 hr 15 min on switchback road.
Stay overnight. A same-day trip gives you four hours on site after a 2 hr 30 min each-way drive, enough only for the temple and Chauli ki Jali. The sunrise view of Trishul and Nanda Devi needs a night. For a single day out of Haldwani, swap to Bhimtal.
Budget: KMVN guest house Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,500. Mid-range: The Birdcage, Sun and Mist Rs 4,500 to Rs 6,500. Premium boutique: Te Aroha, Stillwoods Rs 7,500 to Rs 14,000. Peak weeks book 3 to 4 weeks in advance.
Three daily Uttarakhand Roadways buses from Haldwani Roadways at Tikonia: 06:30 AM, 09:45 AM and 02:30 PM. Fare Rs 180 to Rs 220, journey 3 hr 30 min to 4 hr 30 min. The afternoon bus reaches Mukteshwar after sunset, which is risky on switchback road.
