Author: HotelsInHaldwani Editorial Updated: May 6, 2026 Read time: 9 min

The short answer: Nainital is 38 km from Haldwani via NH 109 (Kaladhungi route), a 1 hour 10 minute drive by sedan in normal traffic. The Bhowali route is 41 km and slightly longer but avoids the congested Nainital entry. Cab fare in 2026 runs ₹1,200–₹1,500 one-way for a non-AC sedan, ₹1,800–₹2,200 for an AC SUV, ₹2,200–₹2,800 for an Innova. State buses run every 30 minutes from Haldwani Roadways at ₹50–₹80. There is no train line to Nainital, Kathgodam is the railhead. The last bus down from Nainital is at 7:00 PM. Most first-time travellers overpay cabs by 30–50 percent because they don't pre-negotiate fares at Kathgodam Junction.

Which route is right depends on traffic, weather, and whether you're sightseeing on the way.

Route 1 · NH 109 Kaladhungi

Standard route (38 km, 1 hr 10 min)

Best for: First-time travellers, day trippers, families with kids. The default route used by most state buses and 80 percent of cab operators. Tarmac quality consistent; toll-free.

Avoid when: Summer weekends, the final 4 km bottleneck through Tallital can add 45 minutes.

Bhowali route (41 km, 1 hr 25 min)

Best for: Summer weekends, long-weekend traffic, travellers continuing to Kainchi Dham, Bhimtal or Mukteshwar. Enters Nainital via Mallital (less congested).

Bonus: Cleaner sight-line for first views of Nainital lake from the descent.

Route 3 · Kalyanvarunavat

Scenic loop (47 km, 1 hr 50 min)

Best for: Photographers, time-rich travellers, return drives. Passes through pine forests and several panoramic viewpoints. Empty even on peak weekends.

Avoid when: Monsoon (Jul–Sep), narrow stretches can flood; some sections close after rain.

Route 4 · Kathgodam Bypass

Kathgodam-Bhimtal-Naini route (52 km, 2 hr)

By bus

Uttarakhand Roadways: cheap, frequent, predictable.

State Roadways runs buses from Haldwani Roadways (the main bus stand on Nainital Road, 1.8 km from Kathgodam Junction) to Nainital every 30 minutes between 5:30 AM and 7:30 PM.

Fare: Rs 50-80 non-AC, Rs 100-150 semi-deluxe. Journey time: 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 45 min depending on stops. Drop point: Nainital Tallital bus stand (south end of the lake, walking distance to Mall Road).

The catch: Buses are crowded during summer peaks; reservation is not standard practice (turn up and board). The 7:00 PM bus is the last reliable return, missing it means a Rs 1,800-2,500 night cab.

Best for: Solo and budget travellers, students, day trippers without luggage, anyone unfussed by crowds.

Why most travellers end up taking a shared cab.

Travellers arriving on the morning Kathgodam Shatabdi (12040) or the Ranikhet Express land at Kathgodam Junction between 5:30 AM and 12:30 PM. The Roadways bus stand is a Rs 150 auto ride away (1.8 km), and many travellers, especially first-timers with luggage, decide that's already one transit too many.

The Kathgodam prepaid taxi counter (immediately outside the station, run by the Uttarakhand State Transport) offers shared cab seats at Rs 200–Rs 300 per person, departing as cabs fill up (usually within 15–30 minutes during the day). For a family of four it's Rs 800–Rs 1,200 total, broadly equivalent to the state bus when you account for the auto-to-bus-stand cost, with zero waiting at the bus stand. That's why this is the default for most arriving train passengers.

Caveat: Shared cabs run hard until 5 PM, sparsely after that. If your train arrives after 6 PM, expect to pay full sedan rate.

First-time-traveller tips most people miss.

1. Pre-negotiate the cab fare before boarding. Cab operators at Kathgodam routinely quote tourists 30–50 percent above the local rate. The non-AC sedan rate to Nainital in May 2026 is Rs 1,200–Rs 1,500. Quote that number first; walk away from anything significantly higher.

2. The hill section is winding. Anyone prone to motion sickness should take Avomine 30 minutes before departure. The final 8 km from Bhowali to Nainital is the worst stretch. Sit in the front passenger seat if you're with kids or elderly.

3. Altitude reality. Nainital sits at 1,938 m. The temperature drop from Haldwani is 8–12 deg C. In summer it's a relief; in winter (Dec–Feb) you'll want a proper jacket even if Haldwani was 18 deg C when you left.

4. Mall Road parking is brutal. If you've hired your own car, factor a Rs 200–Rs 300 parking fee plus a 600 m walk to Mall Road. The first parking lot you'll see (near Tallital bus stand) is often full by 11 AM on weekends.

5. Don't underestimate return-leg traffic. Sunday evening 4–7 PM from Nainital to Haldwani is the worst window of the week. If you can leave by 3 PM, you'll save 45 minutes.

6. Weekday day trips beat weekend day trips. Tuesday and Wednesday traffic between Haldwani and Nainital is 60 percent of weekend volume, with the same scenery and significantly cheaper hotel rates on both ends.
