Haldwani to Nainital: Distance, Cab Fares and Buses, the 2026 Guide

How far it is, what cabs and buses cost, and which of the three roads to take from Kumaon's railhead up to its busiest lake town, with the fares people really pay and the mistakes first-time visitors tend to make.

The short answer: Nainital is about 40 km from Haldwani by NH 109 through Kathgodam and Jyolikot, or 34.5 km from Kathgodam railway station, and the drive takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes in light traffic. The road through Bhimtal and Bhowali is about 46 km. In 2026 a cab costs ₹1,200–₹1,500 one-way in a non-AC sedan, ₹1,800–₹2,200 for an AC SUV and ₹2,200–₹2,800 for an Innova. State buses leave Haldwani Roadways every 30 minutes and cost ₹50–₹80. No train goes to Nainital, since Kathgodam is the end of the line, and the last bus down from Nainital leaves at 7:00 PM. Most first-timers pay 30–50 percent too much for their cab because they do not agree the fare before leaving Kathgodam Junction.

Driving routes

The three roads from Haldwani to Nainital.

We checked distances and times on Google Maps on 14 October 2026, starting from the Haldwani Roadways bus stand and assuming light traffic. Weekends and holidays take longer, mostly on the last stretch into town. Road 1 · NH 109 via Kathgodam and Jyolikot

Main road (about 40 km, 1 hr 20 min)

The road almost everyone takes. It runs from Haldwani through Kathgodam, Ranibagh and Jyolikot, then climbs to Tallital at the south end of the lake. The state buses and most taxis use it, and Google Maps picks it by default: 40 km from the Haldwani Roadways bus stand and 34.5 km from Kathgodam railway station.

Avoid it if you can in summer and on long weekends, when the final approach into Tallital becomes the slowest part of the trip.

Road 2 · Via Bhimtal and Bhowali

Bhimtal road (about 46 km, 1 hr 40 min)

Take it if you want to stop at Bhimtal on the way, or if you are carrying on to Kainchi Dham or Mukteshwar afterwards. From Kathgodam the road climbs to Bhimtal, continues to Bhowali and reaches Nainital from there. Google Maps puts it at about 46 km from the Haldwani bus stand, 15 to 20 minutes slower than the main road in light traffic.

Road 3 · Via Kaladhungi

Kaladhungi road (about 64 km, 2 hr 10 min)

A forest drive on the west side, and a way round if NH 109 is shut. The road heads west from Haldwani to Kaladhungi, where Jim Corbett's old home stands, then climbs past Khurpatal into Nainital. It is about 64 km to Mallital and takes over two hours.

Bear in mind that this is the long way round, and for an ordinary trip NH 109 is quicker.

We checked these fares with five licensed Haldwani operators in May 2026. App cabs are hard to find here, so most travellers book through a local operator or a hotel cab desk.

By bus

Roadways buses: cheap, frequent and easy to plan around.

Uttarakhand Roadways buses leave Haldwani Roadways, the main bus stand on Nainital Road, 1.8 km from Kathgodam Junction, for Nainital every 30 minutes between 5:30 AM and 7:30 PM.

The fare is Rs 50-80 on a non-AC bus and Rs 100-150 on a semi-deluxe. The journey takes 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 45 min, depending on how often the bus stops. You get off at the Tallital bus stand at the south end of the lake, within walking distance of Mall Road.

The catch is that buses fill up at the summer peak, and seats are not usually reserved, so you simply turn up and get on. The 7:00 PM bus is the last one back you can count on, and if you miss it a cab down at night costs Rs 1,800-2,500.

The bus suits solo and budget travellers, students, day trippers without luggage and anyone who does not mind a crowd.

Why most travellers end up taking a shared cab.

The morning Kathgodam Shatabdi (12040) and the Ranikhet Express bring travellers into Kathgodam Junction between 5:30 AM and 12:30 PM. The Roadways bus stand is 1.8 km away, a Rs 150 auto ride, and many people, especially first-timers with luggage, would rather not change vehicles one more time.

Couples coming in on the overnight Ranikhet Express who want a room before the climb can look at couple-friendly hotels near Kathgodam station, which lists six licensed hotels within 1.5 km of Platform 1 that take unmarried couples with ID.

Right outside the station, the prepaid taxi counter run by Uttarakhand State Transport sells shared cab seats at Rs 200–Rs 300 per person. Each cab leaves when it is full, which during the day usually takes 15–30 minutes. A family of four pays Rs 800–Rs 1,200 in all, broadly what the state bus comes to once you add the auto to the bus stand, and nobody has to wait around at the stand. That is why most people getting off a train take this option.

One caution: shared cabs run steadily until 5 PM and only now and then after that, so if your train gets in after 6 PM, expect to pay the full sedan fare.

Tips for your first trip up.

1. Agree the cab fare before you get in. Drivers at Kathgodam often quote tourists 30–50 percent above the local rate. In May 2026 a non-AC sedan to Nainital cost Rs 1,200–Rs 1,500, so name that figure first and walk away from anything much higher.

2. The hill road twists a lot. If you get motion sickness, take Avomine 30 minutes before you set off. The worst stretch is the final 8 km from Bhowali to Nainital. If you are travelling with children or elderly relatives, sit in the front passenger seat.

3. It is much colder at the top. Nainital is at 1,938 m and is 8–12 deg C cooler than Haldwani. In summer that comes as a relief, but in winter (Dec–Feb) you will want a proper jacket, even if it was 18 deg C in Haldwani when you left.

4. Parking near Mall Road is hard to find. If you have your own car, allow Rs 200–Rs 300 for parking and a 600 m walk to Mall Road. The first car park you reach, near the Tallital bus stand, is often full by 11 AM at weekends.

5. Allow for traffic on the way back. The road down from Nainital to Haldwani is at its worst of the whole week between 4–7 PM on Sunday evening. If you can leave by 3 PM, you will save 45 minutes.

6. Go on a weekday if you can. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays the road between Haldwani and Nainital carries 60 percent of the weekend traffic, the scenery is the same, and hotels at both ends are a good deal cheaper.

October 2026: traffic holds and advice to book ahead.

Two things are worth knowing before a weekend drive up. Since 3 October 2026 the Nainital Police weekend plan has held uphill traffic from Haldwani and Kathgodam between 4 PM and 10 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, so set off before lunch. Then on 6 October 2026 a meeting chaired by Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat asked visitors to book rooms before they come and said bookings may be checked at busy times. Some reports said that at peak periods only people with bookings might be let into Nainital and Kainchi Dham, but as of 9 October 2026 no such order had been issued.

Stay in Haldwani for a cheaper, more flexible trip

A mid-range room in Haldwani costs ₹2,000–₹4,500, against ₹4,500–₹8,000 for the same standard in Nainital. If you are also seeing Bhimtal, Kainchi Dham or Corbett, Haldwani is the natural place to base yourself.
