Six licensed hotels lie within 1.5 km of Platform 1, and all six accept couples on ID. OYO's couple filter for Kathgodam lists nothing closer than 3.6 km. Here is what that difference means when your train gets in at 5 AM.
The short answer: six licensed hotels lie within 1.5 km of Kathgodam Junction, and all six accept unmarried couples on government photo ID and register both guests. A basic room costs Rs 799 to Rs 1,199. Hotel Castle Inn, 800 metres away, is the closest to Platform 1, and its night desk is used to guests off the 05:05 Ranikhet Express. One thing is worth knowing before you book. OYO has a page called Couple Friendly Hotels in Kathgodam Railway Station, yet none of its ten hotels is near the station. The nearest is 3.6 km away and most are 6.2 to 7.6 km out, in parts of the city that have nothing to do with the railway. Two of the ten are daytime-only rooms that close at 8 PM. If you are coming by train and want to stay close to it, book one of the hotels near the station directly.

Search OYO for couple-friendly hotels at Kathgodam Railway Station and you land on a page headed “Couple Friendly Hotels in Kathgodam Railway Station, Haldwani (10 OYOs)”, with rates from about Rs 888. Ten options at the station sounds like plenty of choice.
Then you read the distance under each hotel's name. The closest is 3.6 km away. The rest are 6.2 km to 7.6 km away, and their addresses give the game away, because Mangal Parao, Rampur Road, Kusumkhera, Kathghariya and Meera Marg are all neighbourhoods of Haldwani city. Kathgodam is at the northern end of the municipality, while these OYO hotels are in the middle of town.
One of them is even called Super Collection O Haldwani Railway Junction, and it is 6.8 km from the railway junction.
Two of the ten cannot give you a bed for the night at all. Collection O Shri Kalu Siddh Temple and Townhouse Oak Haldwani RTO Office both have [Day Stay - 8 AM to 8 PM] at the start of the listing title, which means they are twelve-hour daytime bookings. If you arrive at 05:05, a day-stay booking does not begin for another three hours and is over before the evening is. The same trap turns up on OYO's Nainital couple list, where two of the six are day stays only.
None of this makes OYO a bad way to book. It just means the page title is misleading about where the hotels are. If you want a room you can walk to, or reach in a two-minute auto ride, after a night train, the filter is sending you 6 km in the wrong direction.

All six register both guests and accept Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or driving licence, and none of them asks for a marriage certificate. What separates them is staffing rather than policy. Castle Inn and Hotel Surya have 24-hour desks whose night staff deal with train arrivals all the time, while the two SPOT ON hotels follow OYO's partner procedure, which is consistent but slower if you turn up without warning.
The Ranikhet Express (15013) calls at Delhi Sarai Rohilla at 20:40, leaves Delhi Junction at 22:05 and reaches Kathgodam at 05:05. Most couples on this route take it, and 5 AM is the hour when a check-in is most likely to go wrong. That is not because of any law, and usually not because of hotel policy, but because the person at the desk at 5 AM is often not the person who wrote the policy.
Book a hotel with a 24-hour reception, not just a 24-hour phone. They are not the same thing, and a night number that rings in someone's home is not a staffed desk.
Phone between 2 PM and 5 PM the day before and ask three things: whether they accept unmarried couples on Aadhaar for both guests, whether the night shift has the same instructions as the day shift, and whether they can note your name and phone number for the 5 AM desk. A hotel that agrees to the third is the safer booking, and finding out costs you a two-minute call.
Take a prepaid auto, not one you bargain for. The prepaid stand outside Platform 1 works through the night, and the fare to any of the six is Rs 120 to Rs 200. At 5 AM a bargained fare is three times that.
Keep a screenshot of the booking that shows the confirmation page, the rate and the hotel's phone number. If something goes wrong at the desk, that is what gets it sorted out or refunded quickly, instead of at 9 AM when the manager arrives.

Each adult needs one photo ID that shows an address. Aadhaar is the most widely accepted, and the eAadhaar PDF works. Passport, voter ID and driving licence are all valid. A PAN card on its own is not, because it has no address and so cannot be used for the police register.
Both of you are registered. A hotel cannot legally record only one guest on a booking for two. If a desk offers to register just one of you, it is not doing you a favour but taking a shortcut that causes trouble later.
Your surnames do not need to match. This is the worry that sends most couples looking for a workaround they do not need. Two different surnames on two IDs is perfectly ordinary, and every desk near the station sees it every week.
Local ID is fine here. An Aadhaar with a Haldwani, Kathgodam or wider Kumaon address is not a problem at any of the six. This matters more than it sounds, because a large share of the couples who book near the station come from within the district. A word on the UCC. Since January 2025, Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code has required live-in relationships to be registered. It applies to couples living together in a shared household. A hotel booking is not that, so no paperwork applies, and no hotel near the station asks for it.

Stay near the station if you arrive after 10 PM or before 6 AM, are leaving on an early train, or are heading up to Nainital, Bhimtal or Kainchi Dham the next morning. Staying within 1.5 km saves you a 15 to 20 minute drive across the city at each end of your stay, and at 5 AM that is the difference between being in bed by 5:40 and by 6:25.
Move into the city if you want a restaurant in the hotel, a pool, a room above Rs 2,000, or a hotel with its written couple policy framed on the wall. The hotels near the station are budget hotels, and a basic room there tops out at around Rs 1,199. Anything more comfortable is in central Haldwani or out on Rampur Road.

It rarely happens near the station, and you can recover from it. What you do, and in what order, matters more than winning the argument.
Ask to see the hotel's policy in writing. A licensed hotel has a register and a policy. If the desk cannot show you either, the refusal is the decision of whoever is on shift rather than a hotel rule, and the manager will usually overturn it in the morning. Make a note of the staff member's name.
Do not stand there arguing at 5 AM. There are five other hotels within 1.5 km and the prepaid auto stand is still open. Getting into a room matters more than being right.
If you booked through an app or website, raise a complaint while you are still at the desk. The time and place recorded with it make a refund claim stronger, and customer support can sometimes ring the hotel while you wait.
Head for a fallback. Castle Inn, Surya and Friends all have 24-hour desks and all three take walk-ins. They lie between 800 m and 1.2 km from the platform, so if one turns you away, the other two are only a five-minute auto ride off.

No. The Uniform Civil Code registration rule, in force in Uttarakhand since January 2025, applies to live-in relationships, which the law defines as a shared household in a marriage-like arrangement. A hotel booking is not living together, no registration paperwork applies to it, and no hotel near Kathgodam station asks for a UCC certificate at check-in. Nor is there any Indian law that stops two consenting adults with valid ID from sharing a hotel room. Where a hotel does refuse, that is its own house policy, not the law.
Stay near the station if you arrive late, leave early or are going straight up to Nainital the next morning, because staying within 1.5 km saves you a 15 to 20 minute drive across the city at each end.
