The hotels under Rs 1,200 within 1.5 km of Kathgodam Junction that we checked for 2026, with their walk-in rates, the best ones for late-night arrivals and the two trains that decide where you actually end up sleeping.
The short answer: in 2026 the cheapest licensed hotels within 1.5 km of Kathgodam railway station start at Rs 799 (non-AC walk-in) and Rs 1,099 (AC walk-in). Six hotels stay in that price range and still have a working front desk, Aadhaar check-in, an attached bathroom and hot water. Anything quoted below Rs 700 is usually an unlicensed lodge with no fire clearance and an ID policy that keeps changing, and we do not list those. The Ranikhet Express gets in at 05:05 and the Sampark Kranti at 22:45, so after price, the next thing to check is whether reception is open at those hours.

Haldwani's official railway station is Kathgodam Junction, the end of the line for the Ranikhet Express, the Bagh Express, the Uttarakhand Sampark Kranti and the Shatabdi. We count "near the station" as anywhere within 1.5 km, which is a 15 to 20 minute walk with one bag, or an e-rickshaw ride of Rs 80 to Rs 150 if you have a suitcase. Honestly, only six hotels make the cut under Rs 1,200 for 2026. The cheapest room is a non-AC one at Hotel Surya for Rs 799, and the cheapest AC room is at the same hotel for Rs 999. The most expensive room on this list costs Rs 1,199: the basic AC room at Castle Inn, the only hotel under Rs 1,200 within 1 km of Platform 1.

Two hotels appear on all three lists, and this one, with its Rs 1,200 limit, is the strictest. Two tests decide who makes it: the hotel must be within 1.5 km of Platform 1, and its front desk must be open 24 hours and take Aadhaar without asking for a marriage certificate.

Rates checked by phone in June 2026. The lowest walk-in rate holds on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and drops further on Sunday and Monday in quiet weeks. On booking sites, all six hotels are listed Rs 100 to Rs 300 above their lowest walk-in rate.
Walk the lanes within 500 metres of Kathgodam and you will see lodge boards offering rooms at Rs 500 to Rs 750 a night. These are real businesses and they do take walk-ins. We still leave them off the list, for practical reasons rather than snobbish ones.
No fire safety certificate. Uttarakhand rules say one must be displayed at reception, and the lodges under Rs 800 around Hira Talkies, the inner lanes of Mukhani and the back streets of Mangal Padav routinely do without. For a single night in transit the real risk is low, but if anything does go wrong you have no legal protection at all.
No GST invoice. The Rs 500 lodges take cash only and give you a handwritten chit at best. That chit will not get a company expense claim past audit, and it gives you nothing to argue with if there is a dispute over your deposit.
No fixed ID policy for couples. The same lodge can let a couple in at 9 PM with one clerk on duty and turn the same couple away at midnight with another. The sensible upgrade. If Rs 700 is your absolute limit, add Rs 99 and take the Rs 799 non-AC room at Hotel Surya. That small extra gets you a licensed hotel, a GST invoice and a written ID policy.
If you are travelling alone and arriving at Kathgodam, choose Hotel Friends. There are three reasons, in order of importance.
First, the corridor. Friends is on a residential side street off Nainital Road, 1.1 km from Platform 1. The corridor stays lit all night, men and women take turns on the front desk, and the back lane goes almost silent after 10 PM. For anyone on their own, and especially a woman travelling alone, the corridor matters more than the room.
Second, the price. An AC room costs Rs 999 on most weeknights if you walk in, and goes no higher than Rs 1,099 in the Friday and Saturday rush. The owner does not chase OYO discounts, takes bookings directly by phone and knocks a little off the bill at checkout for returning guests. You know what you will pay.
Third, the written ID policy. A short house policy on the reception wall says Aadhaar is accepted for both guests and states plainly "no marriage certificate required". That is the right approach, and a good sign that the answer at the desk will not change with the shift.
If Friends is full when you ring at 4 PM, the next best choice for solo travellers is Hotel Surya at Rs 999 for AC. There is more road noise, but you save Rs 100 and are 100 metres closer to the station.
For a family of three or four arriving at Kathgodam on the Bagh Express, choose Hotel Sharda. A family needs different things from someone travelling alone, so the answer is different.
An extra bed. The desk at Sharda will put in an extra mattress for a third person, child or adult, at no charge. Most hotels under Rs 1,200 allow only two adults to a room, so this lets a family of three share one room at Rs 1,099, and that is the real reason Sharda is on the list.
Close to both bus and train. Sharda is 1.3 km from Kathgodam and a four-minute walk from the Tikonia bus stand. If your family is catching an early Roadways bus on to Bhimtal or Almora, being near both matters. After the railway station, the bus stand is the address in Haldwani people ask about most, and Sharda is the only hotel under Rs 1,200 that is handy for both.
Morning chai on the roof. The hotel opens its rooftop for morning chai at Rs 20 a cup, or Rs 30 with biscuits, a small but welcome thing for a family with children waiting for a 9 AM cab. The rooms look dated, but they are kept properly clean and the bedside lamps work.
The drawback is the road outside, which carries two-way traffic and is noisy from 6 AM. Ask for a room at the back when you check in. At all six hotels, the walk-in rate is Rs 100 to Rs 300 below the booking-site price for the same night. To get that saving you need to know which nights to walk in and which to book ahead. The same thinking applies across our wider guide to budget hotels.
Walking in usually works on Tuesday and Wednesday all year; Sunday and Monday in September to October and January to February; the Sunday after Holi; the Monday after Diwali; and weeknights from the second half of August to the first half of September.
Walking in is a gamble on Friday and Saturday in May, June and the first half of July, when people drive up from Delhi for weekends in Nainital and Kainchi Dham; the eight saaya wedding peaks between November and February; Diwali week; the four days of Holi; and any Sunday evening when the long-distance trains pull into Kathgodam.
Ring at 4 PM. Call between 2 PM and 5 PM and ask for the same-day walk-in rate for arriving between 6 PM and 9 PM, not the published rate. If you will arrive after 11 PM, check that they take Aadhaar and check guests in round the clock. Carry cash for the night plus Rs 200 extra; all six take UPI, but below Rs 1,200 you cannot count on a card machine.
If you would rather book online. Booking sites list Surya, Grand Jagdish, Friends and Sharda at Rs 1,099 to Rs 1,499. One of the big sites sometimes offers Rs 150 to Rs 200 cashback on Tuesday and Wednesday bookings, which brings the price close to the lowest walk-in rate.
Three trains decide who sleeps where. The time you arrive matters more than the price difference between two hotels.
Ranikhet Express, arriving 05:05. Go to Hotel Castle Inn, 800 metres away. The night staff are used to guests coming straight off the platform, the prepaid taxi counter knows the hotel by name, and the Rs 1,199 basic room is the only option under Rs 1,200 within 1 km of the platform. If Castle Inn is full, try Hotel Surya at Rs 999 for AC, a Rs 80 e-rickshaw ride away.
Sampark Kranti, due 22:45. Go to Hotel Sharda, 1.3 km away, and phone ahead if the train is running late. The desk is used to late check-ins, the bus stand is close by if you are leaving early the next morning, and Rs 1,099 for AC is fair for the convenience. If Sharda's price has gone above Rs 1,200 on a saaya peak night, Hotel Friends at 1.1 km is the alternative.
Shatabdi Express, arriving 11:55. The Shatabdi comes in during the day, so a late arrival is not a worry. Ring all six between 2 PM and 5 PM the day before, in this order: Surya, Grand Jagdish, Friends, Sharda, Castle Inn basic, Shree Ram.
If you are on the Sampark Kranti, which does not run daily, Castle Inn, Sharda and Friends are the most reliable at answering the phone after 10 PM; Surya and the two SPOT ON hotels take longer to pick up.
Most people who sleep at one of these hotels are passing through Haldwani rather than staying. The fares below are average peak-season rates from the hotel door, checked in June 2026.
To Nainital (35 km, 60-75 min). Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,800 in a hatchback, or Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,200 in a sedan. The desks at Sharda and Castle Inn deal with the local cab stands directly; the others give you a phone number. Our Haldwani to Nainital route guide covers the three ways to get there.
To Bhimtal (25 km, 45 min). Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,400, by Mehrora Road through Bhowali. Ask the driver to take the right fork at Bhowali instead of carrying on to Nainital; the desks at Sharda and Friends know the way.
To Almora (74 km, 2 hr 30 min). Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,400. Fares on this route really do vary, so ring two cab stands and compare before you agree. Castle Inn is the only hotel under Rs 1,200 whose desk will usually do the comparing for you.

Hotel Surya on Nainital Road is the cheapest licensed hotel within 1.5 km of Kathgodam railway station in 2026, with walk-in rates of Rs 799 for non-AC and Rs 999 for AC. It is 1.2 km from Platform 1, the front desk is open 24 hours and Aadhaar is the main ID it asks for. Anything quoted below Rs 700 in the lanes around the station is an unlicensed lodge without fire safety papers, and we leave those off the list.
Not a licensed one. The lodges around Hira Talkies and the inner lanes of Mukhani ask Rs 500 to Rs 700, but they take cash only, can turn couples away without warning, do not give a GST invoice and have no fire safety certificate. The lowest honest price for a licensed hotel near Kathgodam is Rs 799 for non-AC or Rs 999 for AC at Hotel Surya. For Rs 300 more than the Rs 500 lodge, you get the legal protection of staying in a licensed hotel.
If you arrive on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or on any night outside the saaya wedding peaks and the weekends when Delhi drivers come up, walking in saves 15 to 25 percent on the booking-site rate. Ring the hotel between 2 PM and 5 PM, ask for the same-day walk-in rate, and arrive between 6 PM and 9 PM with cash or UPI. Book ahead on a booking site for Fridays and Saturdays from May to mid-July, every saaya peak from November to February, Diwali week and the four days of Holi.
Two licensed hotels have AC rooms under Rs 1,000 in 2026: Hotel Surya at Rs 999, and SPOT ON Grand Jagdish at Rs 899 on a quiet Sunday or Monday night. Hotel Friends sits right on the line at Rs 999 to Rs 1,099, depending on the night. All three have split AC, an attached bathroom with hot water, a working TV and reception open 24 hours.
For the Ranikhet Express arriving at 05:05, choose Hotel Castle Inn, 800 metres away, because the night staff are used to guests coming straight from the platform and the prepaid taxi counter knows the hotel by name. For the Sampark Kranti, due at 22:45, choose Hotel Sharda, which is close to both Kathgodam and the Tikonia bus stand, and phone ahead if the train is running late. Yes if you walk in, no if you book online. Surya's walk-in rates of Rs 799 for non-AC and Rs 999 for AC are Rs 100 to Rs 250 below the OYO rate at SPOT ON Grand Jagdish for the same night. On booking sites, though, Surya often shows at Rs 1,099 to Rs 1,199, because the hotel adds a small online-only premium to protect its walk-in prices. The saving comes from ringing the hotel, not from booking online.
