Where exactly is Haldwani Roadways (the state bus stand)?

The main bus stand's official name is Haldwani Bus Station, and it is run by Uttarakhand Roadways. Locals call it Tikonia, after the three-cornered junction beside it. It stands on the southern side of Nainital Road, just before the road curves east towards Bhowali and the Kumaon hills.

Three landmarks help you place it. It is 1.8 km from Kathgodam Junction, the railway station, 900 m from Mukhani crossing, on the Walkway Mall side of town, and 500 m from Bhotia Bazaar, the old Kumaoni market for shawls and tea. The Delhi to Haldwani Volvo and the Anand Vihar to Kathgodam state buses both end their run here, and the buses on to Nainital, Bhimtal and Ranikhet leave from the same stand between 6:30 AM and 7:30 PM.

This matters because every hotel in this list is measured from Tikonia, not from the better-known Kathgodam Junction. If you are coming in on the morning Shatabdi train, measure from Kathgodam; if you are coming in on the overnight Volvo bus, measure from Tikonia.

The nearest licensed hotel to the Haldwani Roadways exit, a 14-room budget place on Nainital Road opposite the Tikonia auto stand. Non-AC singles cost Rs 799 and AC doubles Rs 999 to Rs 1,299. Couples can check in with Aadhaar, and reception is open 24 hours. There is no restaurant, but the street-food stalls at Mangal Padav are a 4-minute walk away. It suits travellers on a tight budget who arrive late on the Volvo, people travelling alone and anyone turning up without a booking.

Our verdict. This really is the cheapest licensed hotel close to the bus stand. The rooms are basic but clean, and you should not expect a lift.

2. Hotel Friends

Hotel Friends is in Bhotia Bazaar and also appears as OYO 8672 on some booking apps. It has 18 rooms, non-AC and AC, at Rs 899 to Rs 1,399, and walk-ins are routine. Both guests need ID for a couple check-in, which is a little stricter than Castle Inn or Motimahal. The restaurant serves a Pahadi thali for Rs 180. It suits budget travellers who want a hot meal without leaving the hotel and the shawl shops of Bhotia Bazaar close at hand.

Our verdict. A dependable budget hotel where you can eat in. The OYO price is sometimes lower than the walk-in rate and sometimes 15 percent higher, so check both.

3. Hotel Sharda

450 m from bus stand · 1.4 km from Kathgodam

Hotel Sharda faces Nainital Road, has 16 rooms and has been run by the same family for two generations. The walk-in rate is Rs 999 for non-AC and Rs 1,299 for AC. Both guests need ID. Married couples are preferred, informally; unmarried couples are accepted with Aadhaar, but the hotel makes an extra call to verify the address. The restaurant downstairs serves North Indian thalis. It suits families and married couples who want a quiet, cheap stay, while unmarried couples will find Castle Inn easier.

Our verdict. A sound budget choice for the right guest, as long as you are ready for the ID rules.

4. Hotel OK

550 m from bus stand · 1.3 km from Kathgodam

People look this hotel up about 590 times a month, and nobody can quite explain why. It has 24 rooms on Nainital Road, a walk-in rate of Rs 899 to Rs 1,499 (AC), reception open 24 hours and a written policy that lets couples check in with Aadhaar. The interest comes from people who have walked in, not from anything online, since the hotel does not run a website. It suits travellers who turn up on the spur of the moment and budget regulars who already know it.

Our verdict. Better than its name suggests. It is a quietly capable budget hotel, the sort locals recommend without any fuss.

5. Hotel Castle Inn EDITOR PICK

600 m from bus stand · 800 m from Kathgodam

The best mid-range choice within 1 km of both the bus stand and Kathgodam Junction. All 22 rooms in this Nainital Road hotel have AC, and walk-in rates run from Rs 1,299 to Rs 2,199 depending on the room and the season. Reception is open 24 hours and the couple policy is clear: Aadhaar is accepted and the hotel confirms in writing when you book. There is a lift, a restaurant and Wi-Fi that actually works. It suits anyone who wants a decent standard near both the bus stand and the station without paying boutique prices.

Our verdict. Neither too basic nor too dear. It is clean, predictable and fairly priced, the kind of hotel you could book without seeing it first.

6. Motimahal Inn

900 m from bus stand · 1.1 km from Kathgodam

A mid-range hotel on Nainital Road whose cafe is genuinely good for breakfast and an espresso. It has 20 rooms, with AC as standard, at walk-in rates of Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,800. Reception is open 24 hours and couples can check in with Aadhaar. It suits travellers who want proper coffee in the morning, business trips of one or two nights, and couples who want something a step above budget without joining the Castle Inn waiting list in the wedding season.

Our verdict. A comfortable mid-range stay, with the best cafe of any hotel near the bus stand.

7. Hotel Park Land

900 m from bus stand · 1.2 km from Kathgodam

Hotel Park Land is in Pilikothi and, with 24 rooms, is the largest hotel in this group. Walk-in rates are Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,400, every room has AC, and families are looked after with rooms set up for three beds. Reception is open 24 hours, and the restaurant serves North Indian and Chinese food. Couples can check in with any government ID. It suits families coming off the overnight Volvo who need three beds and a quiet room.

Our verdict. The place for a family room near the bus stand. It is a little short on character but very comfortable.

8. Hotel Royal

950 m from bus stand · 1.4 km from Kathgodam

A budget hotel with a small wedding-reception hall attached, which local families mostly use for engagement functions. It has 18 rooms at walk-in rates of Rs 999 to Rs 1,599. The hotel and the hall are separate buildings, so wedding noise does not reach the rooms after 11 PM. It suits budget travellers who do not mind a 12-minute walk, and walk-ins in peak season when the nearer hotels are full.

Our verdict. A useful fallback. It is not the first place to call, but you can rely on it when Surya, Friends and Castle Inn are sold out.

Walk-in rates were checked in May 2026. Expect to pay 15 to 30 percent more from May to June, in the wedding saaya weeks (Nov to Feb) and between Christmas and New Year.

After midnight

Hotels for late-night arrivals on the Delhi Volvo.

The 9:30 PM Volvo from Anand Vihar reaches Tikonia between 5:30 AM and 7 AM, and the 11 PM departure gets in between 7 AM and 8:30 AM. The buses that really do arrive late at night are the private sleeper coaches, which pull in between 1 AM and 3 AM.

If your bus gets in between 1 AM and 3 AM, three hotels are dependable. Hotel Castle Inn is 600 m away, close enough to walk with luggage if your bag has wheels. Motimahal Inn is 900 m away, so take a shared auto for Rs 30. Hotel Park Land, also 900 m away, has triple beds for families. All three keep reception staffed at night, will check you in without an advance booking if they have rooms, and accept Aadhaar from couples without telling you to "come back at 7 AM".

If you are catching a 5 AM Shatabdi from Kathgodam. Choose Castle Inn (800 m from Kathgodam) or Motimahal Inn (1.1 km). Both can book you a cab to the station for 4:15 AM, and checking out at that hour is easy because the night reception staff are already on duty.

Stay away from lodges asking less than Rs 700 a night. Several unlicensed lodges between Tikonia and Kathgodam advertise rooms at Rs 500. In three cases reported by readers in 2025 to 2026, guests were turned away in the middle of the night even though they had called ahead. Every hotel in this list holds a government licence and will not turn you away on a walk-in night.

Getting from the bus stand to Kathgodam station (1.8 km).

If you arrive by bus and carry on by train, or the other way round, you will need to cover the 1.8 km between Tikonia and Kathgodam Junction. There are four ways to do it.

Shared auto (Rs 30 to Rs 40 per person). This is what most people do. Shared autos leave all the time from the Tikonia auto stand, 50 m from the bus stand exit; just ask for Kathgodam Station. The ride takes 10 minutes, and at busy times an auto fills up in 3 to 5 minutes.

Reserved auto or e-rickshaw (Rs 80 to Rs 120). Worth it if you have luggage or are travelling with older family members. The driver charges for the vehicle rather than per person, and drops you at the station entrance instead of the shared-auto stop.

App cab (Rs 90 to Rs 150 when available). Uber and Ola are hit and miss on this short run, especially after 9 PM. Allow 5 to 10 minutes to get a driver, and do not make it your only plan.

Walking. It takes around 22 minutes. The footpath along Nainital Road is continuous for the first 1.2 km and patchy for the last 600 m. We would not walk it after dark or with a wheeled suitcase, but with a backpack in daylight it is perfectly fine.
