The clearest, driest month on the lake, with a crowded first half and a quiet second half. What the weather really is, what runs and what it costs.
The short answer: November is the driest and clearest month of the year in the Nainital hills. IMD’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Mukteshwar, the nearest observatory, give 17 °C days, 6 °C nights and 7.9 mm of rain, less than one rainy day in the month, which is why the snow range stands out so sharply from Snow View and Tiffin Top. It will not snow: we found no November snowfall in Nainital in any of the last three years. The first half of the month is busy, because Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November in 2026, and the second half is the quietest, best-value stretch before the New Year rush. On weekends, plan around the police rule that holds uphill traffic from Haldwani between 4 PM and 10 PM.
Most of this page holds for any November. These are the dates and rules for this year, as we checked them.
November 2026, checked 4 October 2026
Nainital has no up-to-date IMD normals of its own, so we use Mukteshwar, the IMD observatory 2,286 m up in the same hills, about 200 m above Nainital town. Treat its nights as a little colder than the lakeside. For a cross-check, an older IMD table for Nainital itself, covering 1961 to 1979, gives a November average of 15.3 °C by day and 5.8 °C at night, very close.
| Month | Average night | Average day | Rain | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 9.3 °C | 19.7 °C | 30.4 mm | 1.7 |
| November | 6.1 °C | 17.2 °C | 7.9 mm | 0.7 |
| December | 3.6 °C | 14.4 °C | 17.7 mm | 1.1 |
Two things stand out. November has the least rain of any month in the year, under 8 mm, and the nights drop about three degrees from October. The old Nainital table records a November low of minus 1.1 °C, so a frosty morning late in the month is possible even though the average is well above freezing. Down in Haldwani the same month is much milder: IMD’s normals for Pantnagar, the nearest plains observatory, give 27 °C days and 10 °C nights in November, so you will feel the drop the moment the road climbs past Kathgodam.
The first half is a festival fortnight. In 2026 Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, with Govardhan Puja and Uttarakhand’s state foundation day on Monday 9 November, which makes a long weekend for many families. Hotel rates climb, the lake-side rooms go first, and the hill road is slow. Kainchi Dham, 17 km away, is busy too: the temple’s camera count recorded 362,721 visitors in November 2025, about 12,000 a day, slightly more than in October, according to the series Amar Ujala published and we set out in our Kainchi Dham crowd calendar.
The second half is the sweet spot. From about 16 November the festival traffic has gone home, the weather is just as clear and the nights are colder. The one exception is the weekend before Guru Nanak Jayanti, Tuesday 24 November, when anyone who can take the Monday off will. If you can choose any dates in the month, choose a weekday between 16 and 30 November. After that the cold deepens and the Christmas rush begins, which we cover in Nainital in December.
Almost certainly not. We went through three winters of news reports for the Nainital hills and found no snowfall in Nainital in November in 2023, 2024 or 2025. The first snow of each of those winters came on 1 February 2024, 9 December 2024 and 23 January 2026, and even then it settled on Naina Peak, Kilbury and the ridges rather than on Mall Road. The nearest thing to November snow on record is a twenty-minute fall with hail at Mukteshwar on 25 October 2023, reported by Amar Ujala.
If snow is the point of the trip, come in January or February and stay high. Our guide to Uttarakhand in winter sets out where it fell in each of the last three winters and how to reach it. Our guide to Nainital snowfall has your chances month by month and the spots where snow settles first. The places most likely to get it, ranked by the last three winters, are in where to see snow in Uttarakhand.
What November does have is visibility. After the monsoon has washed the air and before the winter rain arrives, the long line of snow peaks to the north shows up on most mornings. The best places to see it, with heights from the Nainital district administration:
Go early. The clearest light is in the first two or three hours after sunrise, before the valley haze rises.
Nothing closes for the season in November. Prices change more often than schedules, so check these on the day.
The Nainital Police weekend plan, reported on 3 October 2026, is the rule most visitors will run into. On Saturdays and Sundays from 4 PM to 10 PM, traffic coming down the hill gets priority and uphill traffic from Haldwani and Kathgodam towards Nainital, Bhowali and Bhimtal is held. From 5 PM the Bhimtal junction runs one way, and from 5:30 PM traffic for Nainital is stopped for about three hours. The police suggest the Kaladhungi road for Nainital, and send vehicles from Rudrapur, Bazpur, Ramnagar and Kashipur via Mukhani, Fatehpur and Patwa Dangar. The report put weekend traffic at more than 35,000 vehicles a day.
The practical answer is simple: on a weekend, leave Haldwani before lunch and be in Nainital by mid-afternoon. Our Haldwani to Nainital guide covers the two routes, 38 km via Kaladhungi or 41 km via Bhowali, and the cab and bus fares.
New in October 2026. At a crowd-management meeting on 6 October 2026, Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat asked visitors to Nainital and Kainchi Dham to book rooms before travelling and said bookings may be checked at busy times. Some reports said peak-period entry could be limited to people with bookings; no order to that effect had been issued by 9 October 2026. Hotels and shops must display rate lists, and overcharging can cost a licence. On a November long weekend, have your booking on your phone.
Our Nainital season-by-season rate guide puts October and November in the shoulder band, about Rs 1,700 to 2,600 a night for a couple room in the Mall Road tier, well below the May and June peak and far below the New Year week. Diwali week pushes towards the top of the band or above it, and Saturdays always cost more than Tuesdays.
If Nainital is full or the prices jump over the Diwali weekend, sleeping in Haldwani and going up for the day is a real option in November, when the days are dry and the drive is clear. We explain when that works in staying in Haldwani for a Nainital trip.
If you are passing through Haldwani, November is festival month there too. The town’s Sharad Utsav runs for five days at Ramlila Maidan with cultural programmes in the evenings; the 2025 edition closed in mid-November, Amar Ujala reported on 15 November 2025. This year’s dates had not been announced when we checked.
November is also the peak of the wedding season in Haldwani, which fills the hotels with banquet halls on weekends. Our month-by-month Haldwani guide has more on what that does to room availability.
For clear views and dry weather it is the best month of the year. IMD normals for nearby Mukteshwar give 17 °C days and less than one rainy day in November. Avoid the Diwali weekend if you want it quiet: in 2026 Diwali is on Sunday 8 November. The second half of the month is quieter and cheaper.
Pleasant days and cold nights. Mukteshwar, about 200 m higher than Nainital town, averages 17.2 °C by day and 6.1 °C at night in November (IMD, 1991 to 2020). An older IMD table for Nainital itself gives 15.3 °C and 5.8 °C, and records a November low of minus 1.1 °C, so a frosty morning is possible late in the month.
Almost never. We found no report of snow in Nainital in November in 2023, 2024 or 2025. The first snow of those winters came on 1 February 2024, 9 December 2024 and 23 January 2026. The nearest thing on record is a brief fall with hail at Mukteshwar on 25 October 2023.
Yes, the Diwali long weekend is one of the busiest of the autumn. In 2026 Diwali is on Sunday 8 November, and Govardhan Puja and Uttarakhand foundation day fall on Monday 9 November. On weekends Nainital Police also hold uphill traffic from Haldwani between 4 PM and 10 PM, so arrive by mid-afternoon.
Since 16 July 2026, Rs 300 for four-wheelers from outside Nainital district and Rs 100 for two-wheelers from outside the district, collected at the Lake Bridge in Tallital, Barapather and Fansigadhera, according to Amar Ujala. Parking is charged separately.
