Fortune Walkway Mall, Haldwani: the international brand
Fortune is ITC Hotels' mid-luxury brand, a step below ITC's flagship Luxury Collection but still run by ITC. That means well-trained staff, dependable food and drink, and the steady housekeeping you would expect from a national chain. What sets it apart is its place in Walkway Mall: the 60 rooms are above and within the mall complex on Kaladhungi Road, so as soon as you leave the lobby you have coffee, shops and casual places to eat, without haggling with a single auto-rickshaw driver.
Where it shines: Business stays, because it is predictable and has proper work desks and decent Wi-Fi; travellers bound for Kumaon who want a familiar brand for the night before or after the hills; and family stays, since the mall keeps children busy in the evenings.
Where it doesn't: The feel is international and corporate rather than local. If you want Kumaoni character or boutique design, this is not your hotel; Hotel North House is.

Hotel Maplewood Premier: the wedding hotel
FEH, Maplewood's parent group, built this hotel around Haldwani's wedding trade. With 26 well-kept rooms, the whole of the bride's or the groom's side can sleep at the venue. The banquet hall, lit by crystal chandeliers, takes 150–250 guests comfortably, and there is an overflow lawn for bigger events. In-house catering at ₹1,200–₹1,500 a plate puts it among the city's top wedding venues.
Where it shines: Mid-sized weddings (150–250 guests), family functions and celebrations where everyone wants to stay at the venue. During a wedding its service runs more smoothly than anywhere else in the city, because Maplewood's banquet team has done this thousands of times.
Where it doesn't: If you are travelling alone in the peak wedding months (Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb), the hotel can be hectic, with a loud lobby, banquet music until late and a crowded car park. Book midweek if you can.

Hotel North House: the boutique alternative
If luxury to you means atmosphere, character and a hotel someone clearly designed with care rather than built to a brand's checklist, Hotel North House is your answer. It is a Pots & Stones hotel with 16 rooms in Bamori Malli, eco-luxe Kumaoni interiors, an Italian café on site that is far better than its prices suggest, and a quiet spot facing a garden. Where it shines: Couples, romantic stays, and writers and other creative travellers who want a calm room with a good window. It is the most photogenic hotel in Haldwani city.
Where it doesn't: There is no banquet hall and no conference room, and it is small. It is not a wedding hotel and is of limited use for business travel.
Hotel Blue Saphire Countryside: the 4-star with a rooftop pool
This hotel markets itself as 4-star but turns up on most "5-star" lists, thanks to its rooftop pool, its multi-cuisine restaurant and the value it gives for the price. Couples like it especially for summer stays by the pool, and its ID policy for couples is the clearest in the city. The Moksha Divine: the big pool
A hotel with the feel of a 4-star resort, a king-size pool and a resort-style layout. It is aimed at couples and family groups who want a longer, relaxing stay rather than one night on the way somewhere. The service is good, but not up to the Fortune or Maplewood standard for banquet events. It is listed in our guide to couple-friendly hotels.
