The season so far

Snow has come early and often to the high ground this season, and not yet to any place most visitors drive to. The first fall we recorded was in the Johar and Vyas valleys above Munsiyari on 25 September, followed within two days by more than five feet around Gunji that stopped the Adi Kailash yatra, and by the snow that stranded 121 trekkers on the Gomukh to Tapovan trek and 43 near the Pindari Glacier. October brought repeated snow to Adi Kailash, the closure of the old Lipulekh pass and of the Tapovan and Kedartal treks, and from 18 October a run of falls at Kedarnath, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Auli and the peaks above Badrinath. The most serious event so far is the avalanche on the Kedartal trek reported on 30 October, after which eight people were still missing on 2 November. Nainital, Mukteshwar, Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chakrata and Munsiyari town have had no snow yet; in the last three winters their first snow came between 8 December and 23 January.

Questions about snowfall in Uttarakhand

Is it snowing in Uttarakhand today?

This page answers that every morning at 5 am, from the news and the official alerts. As of 3 November 2026, snow this season has fallen only on the high ground above about 3,500 metres: Kedarnath, the peaks around Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Auli’s upper slopes, Adi Kailash and Panchachuli. The most recent fall was at Kedarnath overnight on 1 to 2 November. No town that most visitors drive to, such as Nainital, Mussoorie or Munsiyari, has had snow yet.

Where did it snow in Uttarakhand this week?

In the week of 27 October to 2 November 2026 snow fell at Kedarnath on 29 and 30 October and again overnight on 1 to 2 November, at Gangotri on 29 and 30 October, on Auli’s slopes and the Neelkanth and Nar-Narayan peaks above Badrinath on 30 October and 1 November, and on Panchachuli, Om Parvat and Adi Kailash in Pithoragarh district on 30 October. An avalanche on the Kedartal trek above Gangotri was reported on 30 October.

When was the last snowfall in Nainital?

The last snow reported around Nainital fell on China Peak (Naina Peak) and Kilbury on 23 January 2026, while the town itself had hail and rain. There has been none so far this winter. In the last three winters the first snow on the Nainital peaks came between 8 December and 23 January.

Which roads are closed due to snow?

As of 3 November 2026 no road that visitors use to reach a snow town has been reported shut by snow this season. The Gaumukh, Tapovan and Kedartal treks above Gangotri and the old Lipulekh pass on the Adi Kailash route are shut. After a heavy fall the roads that usually close are Joshimath to Auli, Ukhimath to Chopta, Thal to Munsiyari at Kalamuni, the Gangotri highway beyond Sukhi Top, Mussoorie to Dhanaulti at Suwakholi, Chakrata to Lokhandi and the ridge roads around Nainital and Mukteshwar.
