Hillside collapses at Mangti on the Adi Kailash road, more than 100 vehicles stuck

At about 8:25 pm on Thursday 1 October a large mass of debris and boulders came down at the Mangti nullah, stranding more than 100 vehicles on both sides. Police, including Head Constable Soban Singh Bangyal, reached the site overnight and brought travellers out; sixteen pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat were put up for the night, and a fourteen-member Gujarat group returning from Adi Kailash was walked to safety. The road stayed shut through Friday morning and reopened late on Friday evening, 2 October.

A large section of the Kwarab bypass gives way as the ground keeps sinking

The ground under the Kwarab bypass on the Almora to Haldwani highway has kept slipping since the heavy rain of late September. On Wednesday 30 September a large section of the road collapsed and traffic stopped for a while. In places the carriageway is now so narrow that vehicles risk overturning, and residents and drivers asked the administration to speed up repairs. The report did not mention the heavy vehicle ban in force since 8 September.

Boulders at Kali Pahadi stop traffic near Garampani, debris cleared along the Bhowali to Almora highway

Boulders and debris at Kali Pahadi near Garampani stopped all traffic on the Shaheed Balwant Singh motor road in Betalghat block, and continuing rockfall slowed the clearance. PWD Executive Engineer Hira Singh Bisht said the debris was being removed. The same report says debris was cleared on the Bhowali to Almora national highway at Ramgarh, Dopakhi, Jhulapul and Khakrighat, and a fallen tree blocked the Nauna to Kafulta road near Vyasi.

Pine tree and debris shut the Lohaghat to Pithoragarh highway at Barakot

A pine tree and debris fell on the highway near Lisa Depot in Barakot and closed it for about an hour and a quarter, until 2:19 pm, when the NH division cleared it. Three rural roads in Barakot block were also blocked; PWD Executive Engineer Mayank Tiwari said two of them had reopened.

Three days of rain close 17 roads in Almora, 15 reopened by 28 September

Three days of continuous rain closed 17 roads across Almora district. By 28 September, after the rain stopped, 15 had reopened and two, Pakhur to Chamadkhan and Thaat to Talad, were still shut, according to District Disaster Management Officer Vineet Pal.

Thirty-six hours of rain close the Nainital to Haldwani road overnight and 14 roads in the district

After about 36 hours of rain, two national highways, two state highways, one district road and nine rural roads were reported closed in Nainital district on 27 September. The Nainital to Haldwani road had been shut overnight near two villages the report did not name, and milk and vegetable trucks were sent up via Kaladhungi. By 29 September Amar Ujala counted 24 routes closed in the district, mostly from 27 and 28 September, with no deaths; the Gaula ran at 3,547 cusecs and the Kosi at 12,577.

Fallen tree shuts the Kaladhungi to Nainital road for two hours

A tree came down across the Kaladhungi to Nainital road near Priya Bend on Sunday morning and closed it for about two hours, until about 11:30 am. Police and the fire service arrived quickly, but the report says Forest Department and PWD staff were late. The road had already been listed among the blocked routes on 26 September.

160 mm in a day at Champawat, the Tanakpur highway shut at Singda and Bautdi

Champawat recorded 160 mm in 24 hours, Tanakpur 95 mm and Banbasa 78 mm. Debris closed the Tanakpur to Champawat highway for more than two hours near Singda and Bautdi, the Sharda rose towards the danger mark and two houses collapsed in the Kota Amodi area, with one person narrowly escaping. Several other roads, including Lohaghat to Barakot and the Barakot to Simlakhet state highway, were blocked for hours. On 28 September the highway near Singda, one state highway and three rural roads were still reported blocked.

The monsoon withdrawal line ran through Muzaffarnagar on the morning of 3 October, and conditions are favourable for the monsoon to withdraw from all of Uttarakhand within 24 hours. Rain is still possible around 6 and 7 October in Nainital, Champawat and Pithoragarh. Slopes loosened by the 23 to 30 September downpour, more than five times the normal for that week, can keep failing in dry weather.

District Magistrate, Almora

Trucks, large commercial vehicles and passenger buses remain barred from NH-109 at km 56 and the Kwarab bypass until further orders. Light vehicles, ambulances and emergency services are permitted. Heavy traffic is routed via SH-13 and SH-14. We have found no order lifting the ban, and the bypass subsided again on 30 September.

Official closure counts on the dates they were published. Scope differs by source, so these are snapshots and not a single continuous series.

How this page works

The record has two kinds of entry. Events with full details were read by an editor on a named, dated source. Every morning at 05:00 IST a source check adds any Kumaon landslide or road closure report published since the editor's last check; these are marked Added automatically, link to the report and are not checked by a person. A report about a watched route also updates that route's status, with the report linked.
The rainfall band is genuinely live. It reads Open Meteo directly from your browser on every load, with no key and no cache.
The Update latest status button checks every source again. It recomputes rainfall and river flow from Open Meteo, reloads the official alerts from NDMA SACHET, and re-runs the PWD and news check behind the record, route board and closure counts. That check is shared for 10 minutes, so pressing it repeatedly does not hammer the sources.
There is no official live road feed for Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand PWD publishes a daily closure report as a PDF; the 05:00 IST check opens the newest one and adds its state and Kumaon totals to the closure counts, but PWD stops these reports after the monsoon. The USDMA road status archive stopped publishing in September 2019 and NHAI publishes nothing machine readable for these stretches. Confirm with Nainital police before you travel.
Dogaon is a place name. Several English outlets machine translate the Hindi दोगांव as two villages. It is a settlement on NH-109 and the most active slip point on the Haldwani to Nainital road this season.

Kulagad also appears in English reports as Kulagar. Both refer to the same crossing on the Dharchula to Gunji road, where five bridges have been lost since 1991.
Road closure counts from 3 September onward come from the Uttarakhand PWD daily report, which is an official source. Earlier counts on this page came from press reports. The two series count different things and should not be read as one continuous line.
Uttarakhand had 9 per cent more rain than normal from 1 June to 29 September, by IMD figures cited by Down To Earth on 30 September. The week of 23 to 30 September alone brought 108.8 mm against a normal of 20.9 mm. By 14 September the district spread was extreme: Bageshwar 166 per cent above normal, Nainital 19 per cent and Champawat 25 per cent below.
No deaths have been recorded on the Haldwani to Nainital road itself in this window. The deaths in the record are the Malla Ramgarh tempo traveller crash in Nainital district (14 August), a stream crossing at Didihat (26 August), house collapses in Almora (1 September), a boulder strike near Barakot in Champawat (7 September) and a drowning in the Saryu in Bageshwar (8 September).
The Dharali disaster is in Uttarkashi, which is Garhwal, not Kumaon, and is excluded from this dataset.
