Tourist car buried by boulders at Jyolikot, all four pulled out alive

Nainital · Jyolikot Number One, near the Nursery Gate

Four visitors from Haryana driving to Kainchi Dham were turned back by a closure ahead. On the return leg, heavy debris and boulders came off the hillside onto their car near the Nursery Gate. Passers-by pulled all four clear. Houses above the slip belonging to Kheem Ram, Tila Ram and Shekhar Tamta came into the danger zone and those families moved to neighbours' homes.

Tree and debris crush a taxi at Dogaon

Nainital · Dogaon

Haldwani driver Chandan Saxena was carrying three passengers to Nainital when a tree and debris came off the hillside onto the taxi, damaging it. A motorbike and an oncoming pickup were caught in the same debris. Passers-by got everyone out. Bhujiyaghat outpost in-charge Babita confirmed no injuries in either of the day's two vehicle strikes.

Veerbhatti bridge road fully blocked at midday

Nainital · Veerbhatti bridge

Heavy boulders and debris came down beside the Veerbhatti bridge at about 12:15 pm, completely blocking the road. No vehicle or pedestrian was struck. Block Pramukh Dr Harish Bisht said stones and debris were falling continuously and local residents demanded proper protection at the sensitive points.

Seven villages cut off, 50 schoolchildren stranded at 52 Danth

Nainital · Fatehpur, Baldiyakhan and 52 Danth

The Bhakhra river ran high at two points beyond 52 Danth, stranding more than 50 schoolchildren and holding 8 to 10 school buses. SDM Monika and the tehsildar took water and biscuits to the children. Debris on the Fatehpur to Baldiyakhan road cut off seven-plus villages around Fatehpur Basani, forcing a detour of more than 45 km.

Gaula peaks at 62,041 cusecs, the highest of the season

Nainital · Kathgodam barrage, Haldwani

The Gaula reached 62,041 cusecs at the Kathgodam barrage, the highest reading of this monsoon and well past the 2025 season peak of 56,532 cusecs. Irrigation opened the barrage gates at 11 am as a precaution. Supply from the barrage to the Sheeshmahal and Sheetlahat plants stopped all day, cutting water to roughly two lakh people in Haldwani.

Three killed when house walls collapse at Odyuda

Almora · Odyuda village, Havalbagh block

The walls of a house collapsed at about 3 am. Prema Devi, 42, Kalpana Arya, 19, and Manish Kumar, 18, were killed. Gulab Ram, sleeping in an outside room, escaped. An SDRF team under Sub-Inspector Pankaj Dangwal had to walk the last three km because debris blocked the road.

Two Nepali labourers killed by an old house wall

Almora · Dharkituni, Almora town

The district control room was told at 11:36 am that a wall of an old house had collapsed. SDRF cleared the debris and recovered two men, both already dead, believed to be around 30 and 35 years old. These deaths took the Almora district toll to at least five.

Hillside cracks at Dogaon, road shut five hours

Nainital · Dogaon

The hillside cracked at about 7:30 am, sending large boulders and debris across the carriageway and stopping traffic in both directions with vehicles queued and stranded. NHAI reached the site with JCBs and cleared it after roughly five hours. The slope has kept shedding material since, which is why the same spot failed again on 1 September.

All three border highways shut seven hours on Raksha Bandhan

Pithoragarh · Kulagad, Elagad, Malghat, Ratigad and Haradiya

Dharchula to Tawaghat blocked at Kulagad and Elagad around 5 am, Tawaghat to Gunji at Malghat around 4 am, and Thal to Munsyari at Ratigad and Haradiya around 5 am. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded. BRO reopened the border roads about noon and PWD reopened Thal to Munsyari about 11 am. Fourteen rural roads closed in the morning, nine still shut by evening.

Man swept away crossing a swollen stream at Didihat

Pithoragarh · Dunakot, Didihat

Bhagwan Singh, 42, of Nagidhar was swept away at about 7 am while crossing the swollen Rautis gaad on a shortcut to his fields. His body was recovered about 11 am, roughly 150 m downstream, by NDRF, SDRF and police.
