The run, in one paragraph
The Nainital Monsoon Mountain Marathon is a 5K, 10K and 21K hill run held on the last stretch of the monsoon, when the Kumaon range is at its greenest and the lake at Mallital is at its fullest. Run2Live has been organising it since 2010. The course is hard. The half-marathon climbs roughly 600 m of elevation through Kilbury Reserve Forest before turning around at Snow View Hill, with switchbacks that punish anyone who started too fast. The reward is what you see when you slow down: rhododendron forest, hill schools you only know from old photographs, and the eastern Himalayan crest on a clear day.

Start point: DSA Flats, Mallital
Flag-off is at DSA Flats, on the Mallital side of the Naini Lake (PIN 263001). DSA stands for the local District Sports Academy ground. It is a 6-minute walk from the Tallital boat point, past the Naina Devi temple. Most parking for outstation runners is along Mall Road on the Mallital side; arrive by 6:00 AM if you are driving in from Haldwani.
Route notes (half marathon)
The 21K loops Mallital, climbs the Cheena Peak Road towards Kilbury, drops past the Himalayan View viewpoint, and returns through Snow View Hill back into Mallital. Expect tarmac the whole way, but several gradients above 8%. Carry a small handheld bottle: aid stations sit roughly every 3 km on the half, every 2 km on the shorter races. The monsoon is usually still in retreat, so the trail can be slick at the Kilbury switchbacks. Trail shoes are not required, but bring a cap with a brim and a windbreaker that packs into a pocket.
Getting to the start from Haldwani
Haldwani sits at the base of the Kumaon range, 38 km below Nainital on NH 109. From the Kathgodam Junction side of town, the drive to Mallital takes around 1 hr 25 min in early-morning traffic. Two practical options for race morning:
- Drive up Saturday evening, stay in Nainital. Cleanest plan if you can find a room near Mallital. Hotels around the bus stand fill up fast on race weekend.
- Drive up at 4 AM Sunday from Haldwani. Cheaper, and most pre-paid taxi stands at Kathgodam can arrange a one-way drop. Build in 1 hr 30 min for the drive, plus 15 min for parking on Mall Road.
Where to stay in Haldwani the night before
If you are flying into Pantnagar or training in by Ranikhet Express, Haldwani is the practical base. Hotels near the bus stand have the shortest drive to Nainital in race-morning traffic. A few options worth a closer look:
- Hotels near Haldwani bus stand: eight stays within 1 km, with morning-checkout-friendly fronts.
- Budget hotels under Rs 1,500: if you are sharing a room, this list is the place to start.
- Hotel Maplewood Premier: a quieter night and a serious breakfast spread, for a slightly bigger budget.
