Kainchi Dham by Bus: The Rs 120 Seat on the Bageshwar Bus

KMOU sells nineteen departures a day from Haldwani that stop at Kainchi Dham. Every one of them is going somewhere else and none of them brings you back.

The short answer: the bus to Kainchi Dham is a seat on somebody else’s bus. On its own booking page on 3 October 2026, KMOU, the Kumaon Motor Owners Union, listed 19 departures from its Haldwani station that stop at Kainchi Dham, and every one was a through service to Bageshwar, Ranikhet, Almora, Kausani or Jageshwar. A seat costs Rs 120, up from the Rs 110 reported when the service launched in June 2024, and KMOU times the run at 1 hour 45 minutes. Fifteen of the nineteen leave between 4:45 and 7:30 in the morning. The catch is the return: KMOU lists no bookable bus from Kainchi back down to Haldwani.

There is no Kainchi bus. There is a seat on the Bageshwar bus.

This is the thing almost every page on the subject gets slightly wrong, and it changes how you plan the day.

When KMOU, the Kumaon Motor Owners Union, started selling Kainchi Dham seats from Haldwani and Kathgodam in June 2024, Amar Ujala reported it as a new service of five or six buses a day, with more sent up when the crowds were heavy. That was accurate at the time and it is still how most people describe it.

What KMOU actually sells today looks different. Its booking page for Haldwani to Kainchi Dham, which we read on 3 October 2026, listed 19 departures. Not one of them ends at Kainchi. Ten are bound for Bageshwar, six for Ranikhet and one each for Jageshwar, Kausani and Almora. Kainchi is a stop on the way, on the Bhowali to Almora road, and KMOU sells the seat to it at a flat Rs 120.

That matters in two ways. The good news is frequency: you are not waiting for one of five temple buses, you have the whole morning traffic of the Kumaon hills to choose from. The bad news is that the bus is full of people going somewhere else, it will not wait while you do darshan and nothing on that list brings you back.

The timetable, as KMOU lists it.

Every departure below is a 27-seat, two-by-two pushback bus without air conditioning, at Rs 120 a seat. The arrival column is KMOU's own scheduled time at Kainchi, which assumes a clear road.

Read it for the shape rather than the minutes. Fifteen of the nineteen leave between 4:45 and 7:30 in the morning, because that is when the long hill services set off. After 7:30 there are only four more, the last at 2:15 PM. The first bus reaches Kainchi at 6:30 AM, which on the reported timings is after the summer opening and half an hour before the winter one. We set out every reported opening hour in Kainchi Dham darshan timings.

Hill timetables move with the season and with landslides, and KMOU adds buses when the crowds demand it. Treat this list as the pattern on the day we checked, not a promise.

Rs 110 or Rs 120?

Both figures are real and they are from different years.

Rs 110 is the launch fare. Amar Ujala gave it on 26 June 2024, quoting KMOU's accountant Charan Manral, and it is the figure that has been copied everywhere since, including on some of our own older pages.

Rs 120 is what KMOU's own booking page charged on 3 October 2026, the same on every departure. We could find no news report or notice explaining the change. Plan on Rs 120, and if you buy the ticket from the conductor rather than online, carry small notes.

One more distinction worth holding on to. The Rs 150 you may have seen is the foundation day shuttle fare for 15 June, set by the Regional Transport Office for that one event. It has nothing to do with the ordinary bus.

Where to board: Haldwani, and what about Kathgodam?

The buses start from KMOU's Haldwani bus station on Railway Station Road, Banbhoolpura, next to Haldwani railway station. That is the station in town, not Kathgodam Junction, which is the terminus most long-distance trains arrive at, about 6 km further up the same road.

KMOU's online booking lists Haldwani as the only place to board for Kainchi. Its page for Kathgodam to Kainchi Dham was empty when we checked. In practice the buses climb through Kathgodam on their way to the hills, and the 2024 launch report named Kathgodam as a starting point as well, so you can usually board there. What you get at Kathgodam, though, is whatever seat is left when the bus comes past. On a busy morning that may be none.

So the rule of thumb is simple. If you are sleeping in Haldwani, board at the KMOU station and book online if you want a guaranteed seat. If you are coming off a train at Kathgodam, either wait on the main road for a passing bus or accept that a shared cab will be quicker. Our hotels near Kathgodam railway station guide covers where to stay if you want to be at the start of the line.

The return trip is the hard part.

Getting up is easy. Getting back is where bus travellers come unstuck.

KMOU's page for Kainchi Dham to Haldwani listed no services at all on 3 October 2026. That does not mean no bus comes down. It means the buses that do are the return legs of the same long routes, from Almora, Ranikhet and Bageshwar, and they reach Kainchi with whoever boarded in the hills. There is nothing to book and no guarantee of a seat.

You have three realistic ways back. Wave down a down-bus on the main road and stand if you have to. Take a shared taxi the 9 km to Bhowali, where there is more traffic heading to the plains. Or, if there are three or four of you, give up on the bus for the return leg and share a cab. Whichever you pick, start back by mid-afternoon. A road with one lane each way and a temple crowd does not get faster after dark.

Bus vs shared taxi vs private cab.

Haldwani or Kathgodam to Kainchi Dham, one way
OptionCostTimeThe catch
KMOU bus from HaldwaniRs 120 a seat1 hr 45 minThrough bus, mostly mornings, no bookable return
Shared cab from KathgodamRs 250 to 350 a seatAbout 1 hr 30 minRuns on and off in the morning, leaves when full, kept out of the temple area at weekends
Prepaid sedan from KathgodamRs 1,800 to 2,500, or Rs 2,800 to 3,800 return with a two-hour waitAbout 1 hr 30 minOn weekends it stops at the parking and you take the shuttle in

The cab figures are the ones we quote on our main Haldwani to Kainchi Dham guide, from the prepaid counter at Kathgodam. For one or two people the bus wins easily, even counting a cab or shared taxi for the way back. At four people a sedan works out at roughly Rs 450 to 625 each one way and it solves the return, which is usually what tips a family towards it.

From Nainital and Bhowali.

From Nainital, Haldwani Live reported on 23 June 2024 that KMOU had started a direct bus to Kainchi at Rs 50, with shared taxis then charging Rs 80 to 100 a seat. KMOU's booking page listed no Nainital to Kainchi service when we checked, so we cannot confirm it still runs as a scheduled bus. Ask at the stand the evening before. Nainital is about 17 km from Kainchi by the district's figure.

From Bhowali, the state transport corporation's Bhowali depot started air-conditioned mini buses to Nainital and to Kainchi Dham in July 2025, as Amar Ujala reported on 11 July 2025. No fare or timetable was published with the launch and we have not found one since. Bhowali is 9 km from the temple, so a shared taxi is the usual answer. The only official shared-taxi fare we have seen for that stretch is the Rs 50 the district fixed for the 2026 foundation day.

If you are deciding where to sleep rather than how to travel, we compare all four bases in where to stay for Kainchi Dham.

What changes on weekends.

Since May 2026 the weekend rules around Kainchi have been tighter than the weekday ones. A press note from SSP Dr Manjunath T.C., reported by Amar Ujala on 9 May 2026, barred taxis and two-wheelers from the Kainchi area on Saturdays and Sundays. Cars coming via Bhimtal park at Vikas Bhawan in Bhimtal and those coming via Nainital and Gethia park at Bhowali Sanatorium, with shuttles or public transport covering the rest. The police have kept issuing the plan weekend by weekend. The one for 19 and 20 September 2026 ran from 6 AM to 8 PM, against 9 AM to 10 PM in May, so check the hours for your dates.

None of the orders we read mentions passenger buses either way. They do restrict heavy vehicles and divert heavy traffic coming down from Almora and Ranikhet through Khairna and Kwarab, and the down-buses come from exactly that direction. Our reading is that the bus is still the simplest weekend option on the way up and the least certain on the way back. Before a weekend trip, ring KMOU's listed helpline on 05946 297222. Where the cars go instead, and what is and is not published about the lots and the shuttle, is in our Kainchi Dham parking guide.

Two decisions from a meeting chaired by Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat on 6 October 2026 matter if you ride. When weekend crowds rise, extra shuttles are to run from Bhowali and nearby points, planned at a review the SDM, CO and ARTO hold before each weekend. And the transport department was told to act against unlicensed bike taxis. The meeting also agreed in principle on registration and a daily limit for the temple; that needs state approval and is not in force.

What changes on 15 June.

On the foundation day the ordinary bus does not apply. In 2026 the road from Bhowali to the temple was closed to private vehicles and the through buses to Almora, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar were diverted from 2 PM on 14 June to noon on 16 June, so the Kainchi stop simply was not on their route. The date marks the consecration of the Hanuman murti that Neem Karoli Baba installed here in 1964; his story tells how he came to this valley.

Instead a shuttle fleet ran from fixed points at fares the Regional Transport Office set in advance: Rs 150 a head from Haldwani or Kathgodam, Rs 100 from Bhimtal or Nainital and Rs 50 from Bhowali or Khairna, with the fare list displayed at the parking points. The reports disagree on how many buses there were and we lay out both counts, with the parking points by direction of approach, in our foundation day traffic and shuttle guide.

Who the bus is right for.

Quick answers

Questions people ask about the bus to Kainchi Dham.

Is there a direct bus from Haldwani to Kainchi Dham?

Yes, though not a dedicated one. KMOU's own booking page listed 19 departures from Haldwani that stop at Kainchi Dham on 3 October 2026, and every one was a through bus to Bageshwar, Ranikhet, Almora, Kausani or Jageshwar. The first leaves at 4:45 AM and the last at 2:15 PM. The fare is Rs 120 and KMOU times the run at 1 hour 45 minutes.

How much is the bus from Haldwani to Kainchi Dham?

Rs 120 a seat on KMOU's booking page, checked 3 October 2026, for a 27-seat non-AC pushback bus. When KMOU started the Kainchi service in June 2024 the fare was reported as Rs 110. We found no published notice of the change, so plan on Rs 120 and carry cash in small notes in case you buy the ticket on board.

Where does the Kainchi Dham bus leave from?

From KMOU's Haldwani bus station on Railway Station Road in Banbhoolpura, by Haldwani railway station rather than Kathgodam. KMOU's online booking lists Haldwani as the only boarding point for Kainchi. The buses climb through Kathgodam and the 2024 launch report named Kathgodam as a start point too, but a seat there is whatever is free when the bus passes.

How do I get back from Kainchi Dham to Haldwani by bus?

There is no bookable return. KMOU's booking page listed no Kainchi to Haldwani service on 3 October 2026. You wave down a bus coming down from Almora, Ranikhet or Bageshwar, which may already be full, or take a shared taxi 9 km to Bhowali and find onward transport there. Start back by mid-afternoon so you are not chasing the last vehicle.

Can I take the bus to Kainchi Dham on a weekend?

Probably, but check first. Since May 2026 Nainital Police have barred taxis and two-wheelers from the Kainchi area on Saturdays and Sundays, with parking at Bhimtal and Bhowali and shuttles onward. The published orders do not mention passenger buses either way and they also restrict heavy vehicles, so ring KMOU's helpline on 05946 297222 before a weekend trip.

Is there a bus from Nainital to Kainchi Dham?

Haldwani Live reported on 23 June 2024 that KMOU had started a direct Nainital to Kainchi bus at Rs 50, with shared taxis then charging Rs 80 to 100. KMOU's booking page listed no Nainital to Kainchi service on 3 October 2026, so treat it as a walk-up service and confirm at the Nainital stand on the day.
