The short answer: Nainital Road (NH 109) runs 8 km from Kathgodam Junction up to the centre of Haldwani, then carries on towards Bhowali and Nainital. Along it we recommend 7 hotels, from budget and mid-range to mid-premium and boutique. Hotel Castle Inn is the closest to the station, 800 m away. Hotel Maplewood Premier (1.8 km) is the best mid-premium choice and has family suites. Hotel Blue Saphire Countryside, with its rooftop pool, is the best base for day trips into the hills, and Hotel North House in Bamori Malli is the boutique option. Nainital Road (NH 109) is the road most travellers heading into Kumaon actually drive. From Kathgodam Junction it climbs north for 8 km through Haldwani and carries on to Bhowali (28 km). There it splits, one branch going to Nainital via Pangot and the other to Bhimtal and on to Kainchi Dham, Mukteshwar and Almora.

When you are choosing a base, three things count. The first is a quick start in the morning, without the traffic of the city centre. The second is cab fares, because drivers along this road quote 5 to 10 percent less than they do in the centre. The third is room to change your plans, since you can switch destinations at Bhowali without doubling back.
