New Year in Nainital: What the Last Week of December Is Really Like

How the police traffic plan works, where to park and what it costs, Christmas in town, what New Year’s Eve actually looks like, what rooms cost that week, and when to drive up and come back down.

The short answer: the week from Christmas to New Year is the busiest of Nainital’s winter, and the one people most often get wrong. Hotels in town were about 70 per cent booked for 31 December 2025 and 1 January 2026, the town’s car parks filled by early afternoon on the busiest days, and once they did, police held outside cars at Rusi Bypass and Narayan Nagar and ran shuttles up. A room with its own parking, booked and confirmed in writing, gets your car into town; without one, leave the car below or come up by bus or shared taxi. There is no club scene: New Year’s Eve happens at hotel dinners and on a lit-up Mall Road, and snow on the night is unlikely. This winter Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on a Friday, so expect two full long weekends, 25 to 27 December and 31 December to 3 January.

What we know about this winter, checked 31 October 2026.

Most of this page describes how the week has run in the last three winters, because the pattern repeats. The points below are this winter’s. The police plan for 2026-27 has not been issued yet; in each of the last three winters it was issued between 17 and 24 December, and we will add it here once it is out.

Christmas and New Year 2026-27

  • Two long weekends. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027, so New Year’s Eve, a Thursday, runs straight into a weekend.
  • The entry fee is Rs 300 a car for vehicles from outside Nainital district and Rs 200 for those registered in it, taken at the Lake Bridge in Tallital, at Barapathar and at Phansi Gadhera. Since late October 2026 it is collected by FASTag at the first two, with online or manual payment for cars without a working tag. The Rs 100 fee on outside two-wheelers that began on 16 July 2026 was put on hold the next day.
  • Book before you come. On 6 October 2026 the Kumaon Commissioner asked visitors to book rooms in advance and said bookings may be checked at busy times. No order limiting entry to people with a booking had been issued by 31 October.
  • The weekend hold is in force. Since October, police have held uphill traffic from Haldwani on Saturdays and Sundays from 4 PM to 10 PM.
  • Two trains are hit by the fog list. The 15035/15036 Sampark Kranti between Delhi and Kathgodam is cut on some dates from December to February, and the 15059/15060 Lalkuan to Anand Vihar train is cancelled from 15 December 2026 to 14 February 2027.
  • No Winter Carnival dates yet. The district revived the carnival in December 2025 after seven years; nothing has been announced for this winter.

The week day by day, and what it is like.

Nainital at New Year is cold, crowded and lit up. Days are around 14°C and nights fall to 3 or 4°C, with frost on most mornings by the end of the month; our Nainital in December guide has the full weather record. The Mall Road is strung with lights, there are heaters and bonfires along it in the evenings, and the lake front is full until late. What makes or breaks the trip is the road and the car park, not the weather.

The crowd is steady rather than sudden. In 2023-24 hoteliers reported 80 per cent of rooms booked over New Year; in 2025-26 it was about 70 per cent for 31 December and 1 January, and Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal, Bhowali, Mukteshwar and Ramgarh were nearly full as well. Because New Year’s Day 2026 was a Thursday, the hotel association expected the bigger crowd from 2 January. This winter the long weekend starts on the 31st itself. The table below is how the fortnight has run in the last three winters, set against this winter’s dates.

The Christmas to New Year fortnight in Nainital, 2026-27 dates, with what the last three winters suggest
DatesDaysWhat to expect
24 and 25 DecThu, FriChristmas Eve and Christmas Day. Christmas Day was a police plan day in each of the last two winters, and Christmas Eve too last winter. The Mall stays busy into the night.
26 and 27 DecSat, SunThe first long weekend. Car parks full by early afternoon and the 4 PM to 10 PM weekend hold on the road up.
28 to 30 DecMon to WedBusy, but the best days to drive up if you can. Even so, on Monday 29 December 2025 the lots filled after noon and cars were stopped at Rusi Bypass.
31 DecThuThe hardest day to get into town. Last year two-wheelers going uphill were stopped past Kathgodam and the Mall Road was shut to vehicles from 5 PM.
1 JanFriThe crowd moves to Kainchi Dham. On 1 January 2025 and again in 2026 the roads to it jammed for kilometres.
2 and 3 JanSat, SunThe weekend after New Year, likely the fullest of the fortnight this winter.

Snow on the night itself is unlikely. In the seven Decembers from 2019 to 2025, snow fell near Nainital in three, and only once in Christmas week, as light snow on the high ground on 26 December 2021; most of Nainital’s snow falls in January and February. Our Nainital snowfall guide has the odds month by month. If you can choose, the first half of December and the second week of January give you the same lights-and-cold Nainital at a fraction of the crowd.

How the police traffic plan works.

Every winter Nainital Police issue a Christmas and New Year plan, and every year it works in stages, stepping up as the town’s parking fills. The 2024-25 plan, which ran on 25 and 31 December and 1 January, is the clearest written version, and the 2025-26 plan followed the same lines:

  1. While there is room, cars drive in and park at the three main lots, the DSA ground at the Flats in Mallital, Metropole and Ashoka, which hold about 900 to 1,000 cars between them.
  2. When those are about 70 per cent full, cars are sent to the Sukhatal lot and the KMVN car park.
  3. When those fill too, cars coming from Bhowali are turned at Masjid Tiraha onto Band No. 1 and parked at the Rusi Bypass lot on the Haldwani road, and cars coming up from Kaladhungi are parked at Rusi Bypass on the Kaladhungi road and at Narayan Nagar. Shuttles take people on into town.
  4. If the pressure goes on, cars are checked further down, at Nainital Tiraha on the Kaladhungi road and Bhimtal Tiraha at Kathgodam, and only KMOU buses and tempo travellers go up from the Kaladhungi side.

Last winter’s plan ran from 6 AM to 9 PM on 24 and 25 December and on 31 December and 1 January. It added holding lots further down, at the GIC ground in Kaladhungi, HMT Ranibagh and the ISBT at Gaulapar, and shuttles also ran from Vikas Bhawan in Bhimtal, the Sanatorium at Bhowali and HMT Kathgodam. More than 500 police were on duty in each of the last two New Years.

Throughout, the plan lets through residents who show an Aadhaar with a local address, guests booked at a hotel that has its own parking, government vehicles and people with a shop or business in town. Two-wheelers from outside were barred on the plan days in 2024-25 and parked at Rusi, and on 31 December 2025 two-wheelers going uphill were stopped past Kathgodam, with only local residents let through after an ID check. Last winter heavy goods vehicles could move only between 11 PM and 6 AM from 22 December to 7 January, and on New Year’s Eve the Mall Road was closed to vehicles from 5 PM. In 2023-24 hotels were also asked to give police the vehicle details of their guests.

Three things follow from this. If your hotel has parking, ask it to confirm your booking and parking in writing with your car number, and keep it on your phone for the barrier. If it does not, you will very likely end up at Rusi or Narayan Nagar after midday, so either arrive in the morning or plan on the shuttle from the start. And on the weekend days the separate 4 PM to 10 PM hold from Haldwani applies on top. To see how the road is on the day, Google Maps’ live traffic on the Kathgodam to Jyolikot road is the quickest check, and last winter diversions were also announced by loudspeaker at the toll at Dant Tiraha.

Parking: where, what it costs, when it fills.

The town’s own lots are the three main ones at the Flats, Metropole and Ashoka, with Sukhatal and the KMVN car park as overflow. A new multi-level car park at the Metropole site was reported in September 2026 to take about 700 cars, still being finished; older reports give larger figures, so we have not counted it into the totals above. On busy days of the last two winters these lots were full by early afternoon.

Since April 2025 the municipal board’s rate has been Rs 500 a day to park a car and Rs 50 for a two-wheeler, and a new day begins if the car is still parked at 11:01 AM. That is on top of the Rs 300 entry fee for a car from outside the district. So a Delhi car that arrives on the afternoon of 31 December and leaves before 11 AM on 2 January pays Rs 300 to enter and Rs 1,000 for two days’ parking, plus the state’s green cess on out-of-state cars at the border. A room with its own parking saves most of that, which is one more reason to book one.

If you are held at Rusi Bypass or Narayan Nagar, your car stays in that lot and you ride the shuttle up and back. No shuttle fare has been published for any of the last three winters, so carry cash and ask at the lot.

Christmas in Nainital.

Nainital is a British-era town and its churches are part of the Christmas week. St John in the Wilderness, in the trees near Sukhatal above Mallital, dates from 1848 and is one of the oldest buildings in the town; it is worth the short walk even outside a service. The Methodist church in Mallital had its foundation stone laid in October 1858 and was dedicated in 1860, and is usually described as the first Methodist church in India. The Catholic church of St Francis is the third that most visitors find. We could not find service times published online for any of them, so ask at the church or at your hotel a day or two before Christmas Eve.

Last winter Christmas also had the Nainital Winter Carnival, which the district brought back in December 2025 after seven years. It ran from 22 December to Christmas Day, or to the 26th by another official account, with a boat race on the lake, a food festival, an Aipan contest, rock climbing, stargazing and evening concerts on the Flats. Whether it returns this winter, and on which dates, had not been announced on 31 October 2026. It made Christmas week busier on the roads, so if it is held again, read the dates as part of the crowd forecast.

New Year’s Eve: parties, the Mall and the rules.

There is no nightclub scene in Nainital. New Year’s Eve is spent in two places: at hotel dinners and parties, and out on the Mall Road around midnight. In 2025 several of the larger hotels, among them the Shervani, Vikram Vintage Inn and the Naini Retreat, held DJ nights or live music. The Mall was lit up, with gas heaters and bonfires along it, music from the hotel association, competitions on the 31st and Kumaoni food. For a party in a hotel you are not staying at, ask the hotel directly a week or two ahead; the better ones sell out to their own guests.

Most hotels fold the 31 December dinner into the price of the night, and some make it compulsory: a resort at Sattal, for example, lists a gala dinner charge of Rs 2,360 per adult and Rs 1,416 per child aged 5 to 12 on both 24 and 31 December, on top of the room, on a booking site. Before you book, ask whether the rate for the 31st includes the gala dinner or adds one, and whether a two-night stay is required.

The police are strict on the night. On New Year’s Eve 2025 the district said rowdiness, road rage, showing weapons and drinking in the open would not be tolerated, watched the tourist spots with drones and CCTV, and checked at every barrier. Hotels and other places that serve drinks for the night take a one-day liquor licence and must have armed guards and CCTV. So drink at your hotel rather than on the Mall, and do not drive afterwards; the roads down are checked through the night.

What rooms cost that week, and minimum stays.

Rooms cost more that week everywhere, but by very different amounts. On 31 October 2026 we read the rate for a double room for two on the hotels’ own booking pages and on KMVN’s, for the night of Wednesday 16 December and for New Year’s Eve, Thursday 31 December 2026. They are examples to show the range, not a ranking, and no property paid to be here. CP means breakfast is included, MAP breakfast and dinner, and EP the room alone.

The state-run KMVN rest houses rose least, by nothing to 29 per cent, and they are the cheapest rooms in the best spots; their booking page adds GST of 18 per cent on food but does not say whether GST is added to the room. The private hotels we read charged between 1.4 and 2.5 times their mid-December rate for New Year’s Eve, and the jump is not confined to the hills: the one Haldwani hotel we read went from Rs 7,999 to Rs 18,999 before tax. Minimum stays are real but not universal. Shervani Hilltop would not take an arrival or a departure on 31 December and offered three nights from 30 December instead, while the others took a single night. None of the rate pages mentioned a gala dinner, though Chevron Fairhavens says a New Year supplement is extra without giving the amount.

Two habits protect you. Since December 2025 every hotel in Nainital district must display its room rates at the desk and on its website, after the district found more than half did not and received complaints of rates changing between morning and evening; ask for the rate card and screenshot what you are quoted. And ask in writing what the rate for the 31st includes: breakfast or dinner, the gala dinner, parking, and the number of nights.

Staying in Bhimtal, Bhowali or Haldwani instead.

If Nainital is full or too dear, there are three kinds of base below or beside it, each with a catch over New Year. The distances and times are by Google Maps to Tallital, read on the afternoon of Saturday 31 October 2026.

Bases for New Year in Nainital compared, with road distance to Tallital
BaseTo TallitalOver New Year
Nainital townIn townIn the middle of it, and the only base where you can walk to the Mall at midnight. Book a room with parking.
Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal20.1 km from Bhimtal lake, 53 minLakes of their own and more rooms, but nearly full last New Year too, and the Bhimtal road jammed with Kainchi Dham traffic on 1 January.
Bhowali10.6 km, 28 minClose and cheaper, but it sits where the Nainital, Kainchi and Almora traffic meets.
Mukteshwar and Ramgarh46.1 km, 1 h 51 minQuieter, colder and better for snow views; too far to come in for the night and drive back.
Haldwani40.3 km from the bus stand, 1 h 36 minThe most rooms, most of them cheaper than Nainital, and trains at Kathgodam, but you drive into the police plan every day you go up.

Bhimtal suits families who want a lake and a quieter evening and are happy to see Nainital by day. Haldwani suits people arriving by train, or anyone who would rather stay cheaply and go up early by bus or shared taxi; the taxi association’s shared fare between Nainital and Haldwani is Rs 250 a seat in a four-seater and Rs 200 in a larger jeep, and it has warned drivers against charging more. Our guide to staying in Haldwani for Nainital sets out that plan, and the Haldwani hotels directory lists every stay with its Google rating. For a New Year in the jungle instead, our Jim Corbett in winter guide covers the safari zones and the New Year bookings there.

Getting up and back down on 31 December and 1 January.

Going up, the morning is everything. Aim to reach Nainital before late morning, when the lots are still taking cars; after midday, expect to be held below town. By train, the Ranikhet Express reaches Kathgodam at 05:05 and the Shatabdi at 11:55, and the prepaid counter outside the station sells shared cab seats to Nainital for Rs 200 to Rs 300. Fog can make the night trains late in late December, so leave slack in the plan; our Delhi to Kathgodam train guide has the timetable and this winter’s fog list, and our Delhi to Nainital guide compares the train, bus and car. Uttarakhand Roadways and KMOU run buses up from Haldwani through the day, and for New Year 2024 Roadways added five or six extra buses.

Coming down, 1 January is the day to be careful. On New Year’s Day in both 2025 and 2026 the crowd heading for Kainchi Dham jammed the roads from Bhowali and Bhimtal for kilometres. The direct road from Nainital to Kathgodam through Jyolikot avoids Kainchi, so if you are going home rather than to the temple, take that road and leave by mid-morning. If you do want darshan, our guide to Kainchi Dham parking explains where cars are held and how the shuttle works. This winter New Year’s Day is a Friday, so the heaviest traffic down will be on Sunday 3 January; if you can, come down on the Friday morning or stay until Monday 4 January. For the rest of the winter, from snow trips to closures, start with our Uttarakhand in winter guide.

Quick answers

Questions about New Year in Nainital.

Is Nainital crowded at New Year?

Yes, it is the busiest week of the winter. Hotels reported about 70 per cent of rooms booked for 31 December 2025 and 1 January 2026, and the town’s car parks filled by early afternoon on the busiest days from Christmas to the first weekend of January. The quieter times for the same cold, clear Nainital are the first half of December and the second week of January.

Is there a vehicle entry restriction in Nainital at New Year?

Yes, once the town’s parking is about 70 per cent full. Police then hold outside cars at Rusi Bypass and Narayan Nagar and run shuttles into town, and in the last two winters two-wheelers from outside were stopped altogether on the main days. Local residents with ID and guests booked at a hotel with its own parking are let through, so carry your booking confirmation.

Where can I park in Nainital in December, and what does it cost?

The town lots are at the Flats in Mallital, Metropole and Ashoka, with Sukhatal and the KMVN car park as overflow, and they fill by early afternoon over Christmas and New Year. Parking is Rs 500 a day for a car, with a new day from 11:01 AM, on top of the Rs 300 entry fee for a car from outside Nainital district. A hotel with its own parking avoids both the search and most of the cost.

Are there New Year parties in Nainital?

Yes, but at hotels, not clubs. Several of the larger hotels hold DJ nights, live music and gala dinners on 31 December, and many make the dinner part of, or compulsory with, the room rate for that night. The other party is free: the Mall Road, lit up, with music, heaters and bonfires set out by the hotel association around midnight.

Does it snow in Nainital on New Year’s Eve?

Rarely. In the seven Decembers from 2019 to 2025, snow fell near Nainital in three, and only once in Christmas week, as light snow on the high ground on 26 December 2021. Most of Nainital’s snow falls in January and February, so plan New Year for the lights and the cold, not for snow.

When should I drive back after New Year?

On the morning of 1 January by the Jyolikot road, before the Kainchi Dham traffic builds, or after the weekend. On New Year’s Day in 2025 and 2026 the roads from Bhowali and Bhimtal towards Kainchi jammed for kilometres. In 2027 New Year’s Day is a Friday, so Sunday 3 January will be the heaviest day for traffic down.
